Emma | meadowroselibrary All right, I just asked my dad, and he says Longfellow and Twain, because Twain insulted him. And no he's not being sarcastic.

Pamela | 2209 comments I bet your dad is right! I learned long ago that dad's are always right. I also learned that it is best to let them believe they are always right...even when they are not! 🤫🙂🤫

P.S. It goes without saying that mom IS always right, no matter what! ☺

Joanna And the answer is...James Russell Lowell and Henry David Thoreau! While Lowell was not a Transcendentalist, he did have a great admiration for Emerson, but viewed Thoreau as a poor imitation. This is from his Fable for Critics

Here comes ——, for instance; to see him’s rare sport,
Tread in Emerson’s tracks with legs painfully short;
How he jumps, how he strains, and gets red in the face,
To keep step with the mystagogue’s natural pace!
He follows as close as a stick to a rocket,
His fingers exploring the prophet’s each pocket.
Fie, for shame, brother bard; with good fruit of your own,
Can’t you let neighbor Emerson’s orchards alone?

However, when Lowell was editor of the Atlantic Monthly he invited Thoreau to contribute his account of his 1853 trip to the Maine Woods. After it was published, Thoreau noticed that Lowell had left out a sentence in which he had said of the Pine tree, "It is as immortal as I am". Thoreau was angry that he hadn't at least been consulted in the matter and wrote to Lowell, "I am not willing to be associated in any way, unnecessarily, with parties who will confess themselves so bigoted & timid as this implies. I could excuse a man who was afraid of an uplifted fist, but if one habitually manifests fear at the utterance of a sincere thought, I must think that his life is a kind of nightmare continued into broad daylight." Thoreau refused to submit any more of his writings to the Atlantic while Lowell was the editor. And Lowell continued to criticize Thoreau even years after Thoreau's death.

Hawthorne 😶
