Joanna There was a longstanding feud between these two NE authors. Who are they, and what was the cause?

Well, the authors are Bryant and Longfellow, but I don't know what happened between them....

Mark Twain and Nathaniel Hawthorne. Nathaniel Hawthorne didn't like Mark Twain's sarcasm.

So there really was a feud between them? I'm getting curious...I never heard of Longfellow having a feud with anyone actually. By all accounts he was very kind-hearted and good-natured.

But! Cutie Patootie has a guess! Mark Twain and John Greenleaf Whittier; because of something Twain had written about Whittier.

Pamela | 2209 comments I know Mark Twain hated James Fenimore Cooper and publicly criticized him, but I don't consider either of them to be New England authors, even though Twain settled in New England. Cooper was from New York.🤔This is a tough one, but very interesting!

Pamela | 2209 comments An interesting fact...Did you know that most famous writers have had nothing good to say about Jane Austen? Almost to a person, the 19th century writers hated her books, and even contemporary writers do not like her writing at all. I think that is surprising. I know it's not NEL, but thought it interesting.

Yeah I read Twain's Fenimore Cooper's Literary Offences recently...wow! 🥺 Cooper is one of my favorite authors although you're right, he's not from New England. Anyway, it was hilarious, but greatly exaggerated in my opinion. 🤣

That is interesting! I'm not that crazy about Jane Austen myself (to Ruth's dismay! 🤣) though I don't hate her. Come to think of it, I don't remember any references to her books in 19th century works. Makes me wonder how her fame has endured!

I love Jane Austen, just as Ruth does. With me, it's because I love all things British! The Bronte sisters, Dickens and Beatrix Potter are others I love, too! I think I said on a much earlier post that I know I would have remained loyal to Britain had I lived during Revolutionary War times. I would renounce my U.S. citizenship and move to England today, if not for my fear of flying!

Pamela | 2209 comments I forgot to say I also adore Queen Elizabeth II and greatly admire H.R.H., Prince Charles👑. I was so pleased when he finally got to marry Camilla...and think I was nearly alone in being glad, at least around here, about that wedding. I suspected, even before Charles married Diana that she was not the best match for him. The did have William, though. That is a wonderful thing! I adore William and Kate!
Harry and Meghan are an entirely different story. 🙄I actually check in on the official Royal Family website every day!
Knowing all of this, will you still allow me to participate in your NEL group or will I be exiled or banished??😮
Pammy Jo...a Tory to the core!

Oh dear, how did I get so many Torries in my group?! 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 (Just teasing, of course!) 😊 I love British literature too. Dickens and the Brontes are among my favorites, not to mention such poets as Tennyson, Coleridge and Wordsworth! I think the Yorkshire Moors and the Lake District are some of the most romantic places on earth! But then, what makes them so, and what is less romantic about the great North Woods of Maine? I like what Emerson had to say about it...

"Massachusetts, Connecticut River, and Boston Bay, you think paltry places, and the ear loves names of foreign and classic topography. But here we are; and, if we will tarry a little, we may come to learn that here is best. See to it, only, that thyself is here;—and art and nature, hope and fate, friends, angels, and the Supreme Being, shall not be absent from the chamber where thou sittest. Epaminondas, brave and affectionate, does not seem to us to need Olympus to die upon, nor the Syrian sunshine. He lies very well where he is. The Jerseys were handsome ground enough for Washington to tread, and London streets for the feet of Milton. A great man makes his climate genial in the imagination of men, and its air the beloved element of all delicate spirits. That country is the fairest, which is inhabited by the noblest minds."
