Good question. It's a plot device I guess when the bad guy always wants to play it out with their captive and taunt them to make them suffer for perceived wrongs. Of course, Truman was never going to die or it would have taken the whole Mercy series in a different direction and it's not that sort of series.
I thought that they were holding (and torturing) Truman while waiting for Joshua to join them after getting out of jail. It didn't cross my mind that Joshua would also be on their hit list.
I thought that the torture was part of the ritual and Ollie saved him right before they were going to kill him. These numnuts enjoyed the process, got some sort of sick pleasure from it. They had every intention of killing Truman after about three or four days.
I thought it was part of their routine with their captives. Make them suffer as much as possible knowing that the ordeal will end in their death. Also, I wondered if they were going to use Truman for ransom. Not a money ransom, but something criminal related.
I'm sure torture was part of it. But it really seems they would have killed him sooner if he holding him wasn't serving any other purpose.
I'm sure that the physical and mental aspects of torture appealed to these sickos. Maybe playing it out longer added to their satisfaction, too.
