Nancy | 8 comments 1. I'm looking for a collection of chinese folktales/riddles for kids.
2. Time frame: I borrowed it from my middle school library. So it would be from about 1997 or older.
3. Definitely without color illustrations. Possibly black and white illustration, but the memory is a bit fuzzy. But mostly text.
4. In english
5. One of the stories is a variation of "The Clever Wife." It was about a girl (possibly a princess) that had to outsmart some men (a man?) with riddles. Her final riddle was about standing in a doorway and asking if she was going in or out. Would be grateful if anyone had info about this individual story.
6. Pretty sure there was one story about a thief
7. a US book. Went to middle school in Kentucky and I don't think it was an imported book.

thanks for helping

maybe? I didn't get one of those "EUREKA! That's it!" moments seeing the cover, but maybe if I do some more research into it. Thank you!

SamSpayedPI | 2314 comments The Magic Boat and Other Chinese Folk Stories is available at the Internet Archive. You need to be a member to "take out" books, but membership is free; you only need to give them an e-mail address.

Just to confirm, are you saying The Magic Boat and Other Chinese Folk Stories by M.A. Jagendorf - Rainbowheart's suggestion - is your book?

After looking at the table of contents, I don't believe it is. I don't think the stories in the book I'm looking for were separated by ethnicity. Also, none of the story titles seem familiar. It was an excellent suggestion and very close to what I'm looking for.

Not it, but it's going on my reading list now. Thank you!

It's not "Chinese Fairy Tales."

OOOOO! I did a quick look into "Sweet and Sour: Tales from China" and I'm not 100% sure. It's definitely got one of the stories I remember in it, "The Clever Wife." I found an excerpt here: https://www.learningtogive.org/resour...
But I feel like the version I read was adapted just a little bit. I need a little more time to thoroughly check out the rest of the stories to be sure. Thank you!

I don't think it's "The Land of the Locust Tree: Tales from China"

The story about a girl named Precious Jade is definitely what I remembered from my above clue #5.

Thank you everyone for the great leads and jogging my memory. You guys are fantastic!
