So what are your reading goals this year? Not just a # like the GR Reading Challenge but what are you aiming to accomplish and why.

More contemporary books? More classics? Particular geographic areas? Reading/finishing the entire works of an author? Or maybe none of that is important to you?

I'm going to stew on it for a bit before posting exactly what I hope to accomplish this year.

The Goodreads challenge over the past two or three years has actually helped me regain the ability to read past the first page of ANY book, something I was unable to do during a good six-year bout of depression. It was awful not being able to do something I loved so much, and I was overwhelmed by the number of books out there that I wasn't getting to enjoy or learn from. I didn't stop buying books though, so, slowly but surely, with the help of the challenge (I guess the structure has helped), I've read many of the books purchased during those dark few years. So happy to be reading again, I basically read my way through the Christmas holidays! I still have a load to get through, and they are what I intend to read this year. Some classics, some contemporary, some poetry. Looking forward to it!

I've been kind of thinking that this might be a year of much longer books for me. So I'm starting my year with 1Q84, and sort of toying with the idea of Proust.

I don't usually set reading goals for myself, though, besides the general goal of just wanting to read more.

I love stories; but, I simply must pick up an anchored work of non-fiction once in awhile—other than news, that is.

i actually have a pretty big reading goal for this year! usually my goal (though i don't always make it) is to read 100 books. but this year i'm giving myself a MAXIMUM of 52 for the year. which i'm hoping will make me read some of those longer long long books i always put off because they make it less likely that i'll get to 100. so, for instance, i'm reading the decameron right now. and am aiming for les miserables and the war at the end of the world and some other stuff like that. rabelais. herodotus. i'm kind of excited about it! we shall see...

Martyn | 299 comments Look! I'm on Goodreads for the first time in ages. I haven't had the time to read a great deal the past year or two. I did start DH Lawrence's Kangaroo. I'm on page 50.

Having a reading goal wouldn't work for me, but I will try my hardest to read more than, like, 6 books. (Which is what I managed last year and is unacceptable!)

With the baby finally here, I've been worried my reading would dwindle. I made a Goodreads goal of 10 books for the year and I'm already ahead of schedule! That's a nice surprise. I still find I do most of my reading in the bathroom where I am actually alone. But maybe that's TMI? LOL!

Natalie (nay_nay) | 8 comments I agree with R. a. I am looking to balance out my load with more nonfiction this year. We shall see if I can put the YA down long enough.
