Susan said:"There are 7 parts, with Part 1,2,4 & 7 shorter than the others. If we go for 200 pages or under per week, we get:

Week 1 - Parts 1 & 2, 166 pages
Week 2 - Part 3, 196 pages
Week 3 - Part 4, 138 pages
Week 4 - Part 5, 196 pages
Week 5 - Part 6, 203 pages
Week 6 - Part 7, 115 pages

Does that seem like small enough chunks? You obviously know more about the upcoming challenge than I do.

We could start mid-Feb & finish the end of March, or start March 1 and finish mid-April. The former appeals a bit more to me, but I'm flexible, too."

I think that should be ok, Susan. I'm just a little slow sometimes these days (not commuting to work cuts down a lot of my reading time) but I could probably do this, if it's a riveting read *fingers crossed*

which day do you want to start from?

Well, what's your feeling about the best day of the week to start -- weekend or weekday? We could have week 1 start Sat., Feb 14 or Mon., Feb 16.

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I have a feeling I have this in either audio or print and never got to it - so maybe i'll join in

Join in if you can, Dee :)

Mon., Feb 16 to start week 1 sounds good to me.

Welcome, Dee!!!

I thought I'd timed my request right at the library, but I guess not. Someone else has the only copy checked out, and while I'm first on the waiting list, I have no way of knowing how long till it'll get turned in. The two of you should go ahead and start if you're ready, and I'll catch up when I get the book.

ooh, I'll take it slow then :)
Have only read 3 chapters so I'll read it even slower ha ha ha, I don't mind, for now anyway as story is just being introduced...

message 10: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I read a chapter last night - i'm intrigued so far - its been years since I read Pillars (was one of the only assigned fiction books I actually finished in college)

I'm taking it super slow :)
I think I'm up to chapter 5... I read Pillars last year or maybe the year before. This one is a couple generations after Pillars. It is quite interesting so far!

message 12: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I'm up to chapter 5 too

Still waiting for the book from the library, but I'll catch up. Feel free to talk about it now, if you want. I'll skip the spoiler parts.

message 14: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments a lot so far has just been character introductions, so you haven't missed much Susan ;) - about a chapter devoted to each one who is going to likely play a major role in the book later on

message 15: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments Ooooh, I just realized I bought this at my last library book sale. Wondering if I can juggle it with everything else I have going ?

message 16: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments why not - I think Tien and I are only doing about a chapter or so a day

message 17: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments I'll remove it off the shelf behind my head, and start it tonight when the rest of the family are at cubs.

I did plan to have my Murakami finished this week, and hopefully Cloud Atlas, but I have 5 days for all that, so it can be done. Can't it ? ;)

message 18: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments sure it can (but I am a bad influence)

Amanda | 380 comments Dee wrote: "sure it can (but I am a bad influence)"

Hahaha! I don't need one of those!

message 20: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments Okay, I read the first 2 chapters. Was going to go for the third to tidy up the first part, but switched to my other book with the promise I would come back and read chapter 3 if I read 50 pages of the other book.

I read one chapter and couldn't keep my eyes open. Damn flu lingering and making me all sleepy!

Really enjoyed what I read, surprised that you glimpse so many characters so quickly and they cross paths so immediately, that usually takes at least half a book.

Isn't it amazing just how quick you know which characters you'd love and which ones you'd be cursing... it's only Part One!

message 22: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments I've decided to join in and started reading last night. I forgot how much I enjoyed reading Pillars and Follett's writing style! How far along is everyone so I now how much I need to read to catch up? I just started part 2.

message 23: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments I am in to part 2. Was kind of annoyed that it skipped 10 years, I wanted to get to know the younger characters more.

Welcome, Lahni! I haven't even started yet, because the person who has the book out from the library is keeping it even though it's past due. I'm waiting very impatiently. So jump right in.

When I read about some of the treatments, I can't help but wonder how anyone lived through that time period!

Finally have the book from the library. I can start catching up with the rest of you now. I've just managed to finish Part 1 this afternoon. How far has everyone else read so far?

I wonder ... or will it be shifting on us as we read more? For example, I'm wondering about Godwyn. On the whole, I was really liking him, but I was a bit put off by the scene in which he was hoping to get funding for going to Oxford.

I never knew the origin of the word "forestall" before. Now it makes so much sense!

message 40: by Amanda (new)

Amanda | 380 comments I haven't picked it up this week, but I have a long weekend ahead of me and want to get at least a couple of hundred pages read.

Problem is, I'm trying to squeeze in my smaller library books, and I have Cloud Atlas that is due back soon, which I am needing to read in sections as well, just to get done.

Can I PLEASE stop working and just read ?

Characters do change -some of them anyway who doth learn their lessons but not all. So, who knows, maybe Godwyn will be one of them but... as he still got what he wanted (after being disappointed twice), I doubt it -smacked of a spoilt brat to me.

Part 4 - by Sunday, 03/29
Part 5 - by Sunday, 04/05
Part 6 - by Sunday, 04/12
Part 7 - by Sunday, 04/19

I am really enjoying this book. The ONLY drawback for me is the size and difficulty handling it.
