Sforster | 21 comments I read this book in the late 1970's and I seem to recall being surprised that it was published in the '30's...?
I forget the beginning, or why/how this girl who lived in the "present day," was suddenly transported to a different place. She ends up traveling with a group of insects who are the same size that she is and who can talk. They are a group, who might be guerilla type rebels fighting to end the domination of "the Beasts." Or maybe they are just a bunch of misfit refugees from the Beasts' violence. The book is illustrated and the beasts are portrayed like mutant warthogs.
At some point the group decides to infilterate the Beasts' fort and spy on them, by sending the girl in to replace a canary being held captive to sing for the Beasts' leader. She tells them that she IS the canery, transformed by magic to better entertain them.
Later the caterpiller is grieviously wonded and the girl is very upset, but that turns out OK.

Sforster | 21 comments Definitely not The City Under the Back Steps, (But thanks for offering it as a possibility).

Knee-Deep In Thunder.....? there really is not enough information in the review for me to be sure either way.
