Anushree | 7 comments Genre - children's book
Time - received it as a kid in the 1980's
Language - English
Book description - This book is massive. Probably a foot by foot in size. It had a light blue hardbound cover and a dark red binding.
Book details - the book has illustrations of everyday objects. each page depicted a different scene - a house, a garden, airport, animals etc.
For instance, the house page would show various rooms, the objects in them, maybe a fly on the wall, something on the floor etc
So it was very realistic

LOVED this book as a kid and now I want my kid to read it. But sadly my mom gave mine away. And I just cannot find this book anymore

Julia | 1 comments I think it's the "I SPY" books!

Rainbowheart | 28670 comments The first I Spy book wasn't pubbed until 1992.

Anushree, when in the '80s did you get the book? Did you read it in the UK?

Anushree | 7 comments Hello! Thank you so much for your replies

I checked the I Spy books online but it was definitely not this :(

It was probably bought in the USA.(was a gift)

Also I don't think it was a series like the I Spy books.

It had All the objects, not focused on just letters/animals/fantasy etc

JennAnn | 28 comments This sounds similar to the "First Thousand Words" book, which was popular in the UK in the Eighties. However, it had bright yellow binding. Perhaps there was a US edition with a blue colour? There were also editions in other languages and the French version had a blue cover. There was also a "First Hundred Words" version with a blue cover, but that was smaller.

Probably the most memorable feature of the book I'm talking about was that there was a little yellow duck hiding somewhere on each double-page spread. So if you don't remember the little duck, it probably isn't your book. :-)

If I remember correctly, it was an Usborne book. The numbers may have been in figures "First 1000" etc.

Rainbowheart | 28670 comments First Thousand Words in English for JennAnn's suggestion.

The First Thousand Words by Heather Amery

Earliest edition is this one from '83.

Anushree | 7 comments Hello! @jennann @rainbowheart Thank you so much for your replies. I checked the book, it comes very close to what I have in mind - Lots of nice pictures from an everyday scene depicting the world around us.

However, this isn't the book. Especially the yellow duck feature. It sounds so much fun, but it wasnt a part of the book :) :)

Is there a specific category for these types of books? If so I could Google further.

Anushree, are there characters and a story that runs throughout the book? Or is an picture-word encyclopedia (perhaps with a character "guide")?

Have you tried searching on Worldcat.org? It's helpful for finding old children's books. For example:

https://www.worldcat.org/advancedsear... > Keyword: illustrations ?? ?? | 1960-1992 ? | Juvenile | Fiction | Book | English

Anushree | 7 comments Hi @kris

There is no story running through the book. There are illustrations from a scene in everyday life for instance a garden.

At least that's what I remember of it.

Thank you for the link, I will definitely check it

Sforster | 21 comments This sounds like a couple of books published by Dorling Kindersley. Maybe try looking in their catalog?

JennAnn | 28 comments I don’t know whether there’s a specific category. I tried “Children’s picture dictionary”; “Illustrated Children’s dictionary” and so on, and sometimes added a year. But you’ve probably already tried this. Another thing that might help, if you’re using Google, is to click on “images”, so that you see pictures of the books, rather than a list of links. When I did this, I got lots of results showing books with blue covers, but none that I saw seemed to have red binding. One thought that occurred to me was that the contrasting binding could perhaps give a clue to the publisher, as I think it may have been a little more unusual for books from the big UK publishers in the eighties. (Unless it originally had a dust cover?). Perhaps this wasn’t the case in the US and elsewhere, though. And I wondered, too, whether your book might have been a special edition produced for a retail store - eg Marks and Spencer, or perhaps an educational toy store such as The Early Learning Centre. (or similar stores in the USA). - perhaps inspired by the popularity of the Thousand Words series? Especially in view of its more unusual size. Unfortunately, this might make it more difficult to track down.
I’m intrigued by this query! I really hope you manage to locate the book. And if you do, please do post to let everyone know which book it was!

Christine | 7 comments Content wise, it reminds me of Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever. https://www.amazon.com/Richard-Scarry...

Based on your description of the cover, it looks more like Richard Scarry's Busy Busy World. https://www.amazon.com/Richard-Scarry...

I had both (and loved both) in the late 70s.

Anushree | 7 comments @christine : OMG!!!!! that's it that's the book - the best word book ever - that's rabbit's big family house that I had a mental image of all these years!!

I guess the one I had might have been a special edition because this one doesn't have a blue cover :)

Am surprised though that I was right about its size 😂

I cannot thank you enough for your help , big big hugs. Thank you thank you :) :) :)

message 16: by Anushree (new)

Anushree | 7 comments @christine : I just googled - the 1963 edition had the sky blue /pale blue hardcover - so that might have continued in the 80's too :)

Christine | 7 comments I’m so happy! I LOVED that book as a kid. I was a huge animal lover (grew up and became a vet) :)

JennAnn | 28 comments Hurrah! Thank you both very much - Christine, for finding the book, and Anushree for sharing the glad tidings with us all!
