SOLVED. Ex-special forces serial killers [s]

So, ultimately a thriller/crime novel. With a focus on the investigation. The killers are ex-serviceman (from the Vietnam era I recall), and basically ambush groups of people trekking or at isolated locations. That's all I recall.
