Which Octavia Butler book should I read first?

I was thinking Dawn or Fledgling, with a lean towards towards the former.

Dawn is a fantastic book. I've not read much of Butler's works yet, just Dawn+its series and her collection of short stories Bloodchild and Other Stories; but, Dawn is a fantastic book.

If you don't want to commit just yet, I suggest Bloodchild which is short and can allow you to get a feel; they have some similarities, not a lot but enough to wet your appetite for the other imo. Bloodchild is available online in PDF form free if interested.

both are pretty bizarre alien stories, but with Butler's special brand of depth and richness that make them both so much more than just alien scifi.
