The grandfather also suffered from Alzheimer's, at least before he died. but before he died he wrote a, in the book's universe's, famous book and witch the grandson, when pondering his current found a secret note about the story behind why his grandfather died suddenly and in the middle of the street in a whole different state.

I can also recall in the book that the grandson just comes out of a not so good relationship, as well as that there was some sort of secret society that believed that there was something more to the books and was trying to stop the grandson from getting to it first.
I also remember how the cover had a very mystical drawing of a train on it.
I believe this is all I can remember for now.
