You will be unsurprised to hear that I once spent nearly two years writing down every out-of-the-ordinary number I encountered, just to see if I were experiencing confirmation bias. By “out-of-the-ordinary” I mean that I didn’t include my address on envelopes or common phone numbers. It was all stuff like what just happened: you posted a book cover and it had a 117 on it.

I ended up with a couple notebooks full of numbers, and yes, it looked like a crazy person’s journal. But at the end of that experience, 117 was by far the number I encountered the most frequently.

It happens all the time, too. Super-long bit behind spoiler tag: (view spoiler)[For example, some friends invited us to go to a David Sedaris reading down in Massachusetts. They bought the tickets, made dinner reservations, all that. At the restaurant we split the bill three ways, which came out to $117 each. At the venue my friend Ginger handed out the tickets randomly to us, and I was in seat 117. The trip meter on the car? 117 miles.

When we went to South Africa, the license plate on our KwaZulu-Natal bush truck was 117. My mom’s plane to DC from Ohio was late because Ohio was suffering its wettest year in 117 years. While in Cape Town my mom wanted to visit St. George’s cathedral, and the reading that day was #117.

When we visited Australia two years later, same string of coincidences, like when I was talking cars with our bus driver on Fraser Island and he said he had an Isuzu 117. Because of course he did. I’d never heard of that car before. But the most remarkable was that we left Sydney (or maybe Brisbane, I forget) at 1:17 pm and landed in Dallas at 1:17 pm.

When we moved to New Hampshire our house wasn’t ready yet so we had to live in temporary housing for a bit. We were in building 11, room 7, which made our address 117. The most common number on license plates that year was 117. We closed on the house on November 7, or 11/7. The folks we bought the house from stopped by one day just to see the place, and he made an offhand remark that they didn’t really like the townhouse they lived in now, which had 117 units. He doesn’t know about the number. The Mercedes convertible they were driving costs $117,000 brand new.

It’s been following me longer than I’ve been aware of it. For instance, one of my favorite books as a kid was the Terran Trade Authority book, Spacecraft: 2000 To 2100 AD. The very first ship in that book has the number 117. (https://archive.org/details/terrantra...)

The only Halloween I’ve ever dressed up for as an adult I went as Doug Funnie from the cartoon show Doug. It has 117 episodes. I had no idea, and that’s a weird number.

It gets weirder: In my 20s I dated two girls who weighed 117 pounds, one for 117 days, one for 117 weeks. I was not the decider on when either of those relationships ended. They are the only two women who ever announced their weight to me.

Don’t even get me started on the freaky 117 associations I have with Marvel comics. That’s a book by itself. (hide spoiler)]
