SOLVED. Childrens picture book about a society of Dodos. [s]

Hi, I read this book as a child in the late 70s or early 80s, the details are fuzzy. I think the dodos lived on an island and had roles like mayor ( with a sash ? ) and soldier ( with a helmet ! ). There may have been a hidden stash of delicious dodo biscuits or treats and a dodo egg as part of the plot. I have fond memories of the book and wanted to pick up a copy for my nieces.
