ABANDONED. YA or middle grade about a missing girl who gets found by MC

I can't remember much of the book except that the main character (who I think was male but might not have been) was in some way helping a neighbour or member of the community.

The neighbour may have told the MC about her daughter or may have kept it a secret? (I feel like she was behind a locked door and the mc heard her crying but this might not be right).

He figures out it was a girl who went missing (after a car accident maybe? I think the girl wandered into the road and may have been hit by the neighbours car). At some point the neighbour justifies it by saying that the girl's parents didn't care enough about her and had allowed her to wander off so didn't deserve her. But the MC reunites the child with her actual parents.

There is also something about a song somewhere in the book, the MC's parent/s might have written a song or something?

Also I feel like the book cover was dark blue and the title had to do with stars in some way but I may be mixing that up entirely.

Oh and I think it was quite recently published when I read it, which was no later than 2005 but probably earlier.

It's all a bit vague so any suggestions are welcome (because a lot of this might be wrong).
