Haha, that was pretty much my exact reaction when my friend told me about it. But it's so hard to resist the pull of a good book deal.

Amanda | 22 comments Hi everybody!

I'm Amanda(she/her) and a 39 year old mom of two and lover of reading/ books/ libraries/ pictures of books and shelves filled with books....i think you get the point. Let's just say i grew up in a family of readers and never had any way of NOT being enchanted. I live in Connecticut, work part-time and am back in school for Business Administration, HR.

I usually read a minimum of 2 books a week, but lately its been double that. Hopefully i can keep that pacing going, even if i do not post every day. The kiddos are high energy but reading is my sanity, so it will happen:) So glad to meet all of you!

Hello Amanda!

Welcome, I'm the co-captain helping Lexi where I can! So glad you could join us.

The mods did say any book you started since the challenge started we can use. So say, if you started a book on June 14 and finished on June 18 we can use it even though you weren't officially on the team yet.

If you have books that you are having trouble fitting into open letters, please let Lexi/me know and we can shift things around.

I do have you set up with a personal task spreadsheet already. Please edit that as you see fit for personal tracking of tasks. You can't edit the Master Task List though.

I know it's a lot to walk into, so take time to look things over but please ask us any questions you have!

Amanda | 22 comments I read: The Kite Runner- will fit H, for the authors last name, Hosseini. It is 371 pages, so 37 pts.? It fits task 137, since it takes place in two countries/places.

The Infinite Sea - will fit I for the title name. 320 pages, so 32 pts. Task 175, takes place in the united states.

Working on G right now and i have to look at the other books i read. Hopefully im not messing this up royally! Thanks in advance

Nope, you are doing great! So great actually that we are able to start working on a 7th spelling. Yay :)

Jhmingos | 704 comments When does round 1 and round 2 begin? Is there a specific time on Friday or is it based on your own timezone?

message 212: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments Round 2 starts as soon as Round 1 ends. We all start and stop at the same time. It is 10 PM Friday in the UK, which is 5 PM EST.

I have a countdown : End of Round 1

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1026 comments I think for the first time, I'm hoping we get a word with the letter Z in it for the next round.

My pre-order of Take a Hint, Dani Brown just arrived and I really want to read it but it seems a shame to waste the opportunity to use it for the Z character.

Plus I have an ARC of A Cowboy State of Mind which comes out on the 30th that also has a Z character.

LOL, Take a Hint, Dani Brown is top of my next up list too. We will likely get our round 2 word in the next day or so. There is one word that has a few Z's in it. Maybe you'll get your wish

Melanie (mvalente89) | 1026 comments Question.

Can a fictional place work for task 172 "Read a book set in the British Isles"?

I have an ARC of A Good Duke is Hard to Find which is set on the fictional Isle of Synne which according to the description is off of Britain's northern coast. So it appears to be part of Britain, but I wasn't sure it would count since it's a fictional place.

Nevermind, I found a different task to use it for.

April | 200 comments Finished Olympic Follies: The Madness and Mayhem of the 1908 London Games: A Cautionary Tale

Not quite what I thought it would be. Mostly just a record of who won and their individual back stories

lucy (laladearmun) | 45 comments Hi All,

Hope you are all well and having fun doing this, it has certainly helped me to kick start my reading.

Are there any books that people added to the spreadsheet that they don't think they will complete this week.
Was wondering if that would help if I took over the letter. If not I will just read something on my kindle.

Also, we got our next word. We are Sea Kayaking. So keep those Y's coming.

I'm always happy to recommend sci-fi! Some of my favorites:
Rendezvous with Rama (quite possibly my favorite book of all time)
2001: A Space Odyssey
The War of the Worlds (a classic for a reason)
Leviathan Wakes (just finished this series earlier this month. It's a great mix of hard sci-fi with some fantastical elements)

I highly recommend Invictus by Ryan Graudin. It's a great story about a crew who goes on heists and steals things from the past.

message 222: by Lexi (last edited Jun 23, 2020 10:59AM) (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments For a different take on SF. My favorites are:
The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet and A Closed and Common Orbit
Ancillary Justice trilogy and Provenance
Six Wakes

Also, for tags this week, one of my all time favorite books Circe is tagged underwater/ocean (so is Lagoon (underwater) if you want a different take on aliens)

Another favorite from this year Things in Jars is tagged mermaids.

For sci-fi I'm going to echo Lexis' recommendations for Becky Chambers Wayfarers series. In addition, I just read Skyward and Starsight by Brandon Sanderson, both 5 star reads:)

If you wand more adult sci-fi then Children of Time was one of my favourite books of last year.

Edit: For less spacey sci-fi Recursion was well worth the read:)

April | 200 comments Only books read during the specified round can be used (“read date” is what counts, not the day you start.) Books cannot be “banked” from previous rounds to use later in the challenge

Just making sure I have this right. I can start Sal and Gabi Break the Universe now eventhough I it's for Round 2. The main point is I have to finish it during the time of Round 2.

I'm asking because I know I'll be spending the next 3 days finishing The Bear and the Nightingale for Round 1 but I might get to start it on Friday before time runs out on Round 1

message 225: by Lexi (new)

Lexi | 4247 comments April, you are correct. You can start a book now and finish it in any round. Your plan sounds great.

Kristel, did you read the 2nd for Children of Time? I have it on my TBR list.

April | 200 comments The Round 2 need for Ks is great, but I have recommendations.

the Enchanted Series, starting with Enchanted, Inc., have a few books that start with K but the main character is Katie.

So all 9 books in the series is a K book.

Oh, nice recommendation! I read one of her other series and enjoyed the author's humor.

Gem ~ZeroShelfControl~ (zeroshelfcontrol) | 441 comments I have a book that I can finish this round that will cover H or O or A so if anyone wants me to swap if they dont think they will complete on time I can, otherwise I'll leave 100 pages and complete it for round 2.

And we need a lot of K's in round 2, so the book you are reading works great!

Amanda, I added this to Round 1 for you. And put it for task 177 (MPG espionage), but change that if you'd like.

I saw it pop up on the Round 2 tracking sheet, but that doesn't start until Friday at 5pm EST. You can start a book before then, but if a book is finished before then, it has to be used during Round 1.

Did you enjoy it? It looked like an interesting read. Also was it gory? I can handle some gore but if it gets really graphic or a lot of gore I don't enjoy it

I really enjoyed it. There are some gory bits in it though, but the vast majority of the book is not gory at all.
