Christee (christee1) Hi! I am desperately seeking recommendations for my advanced reader, age 9. He has read the Harry Potter series (twice), Charlie Bone series, Lords of the Rings, and just finished the Alex Rider series. This is all within the last few months of the Covid-19 lockdown. Does anyone have any recommendations for YA books that DO NOT have romance or sexual innuendos?? We are Christian and I would prefer something that is not too deep into the "dark arts", so to speak. It can have magic and fantasy....just nothing satanic or cultish. Seems like his favorite genre so far is adventure, fantasy, spy books. I would love something that is a series because he reads them so fast. THANK YOU for any recommendations, which will help me to continue encourage my son's love for reading!!!

Jia ♥ (bookloverforever101) Percy Jackson? Rick Riordan's books are really good. And he also has a series about this boy named Magnus Chase but there is a transgender character there so I'm not sure if your ok with that but Percy Jackson is really good. It's not exactly YA but it's still awesome. I would reccomend Scythe but it's kind of a twist on Grim Reaper and seeing what you said about cultish that might not be good quite yet.

layla How about The Phoenix Files by Chris Morphew Arrival (The Phoenix Files, #1) by Chris Morphew its a bit like the Alex Rider series so Maybe he'll like it. Theres definitely no sexual references or explicit scenes and I'm pretty sure the language is all fine too. Its about a boy who goes to live in this special town set up for all the workers who work for this company but he starts noticing things aren't quite right so starts investigating (a bit like a spy i suppose)

May | 206 comments I also think Rick Riordan's books are great but to be honest I thought Percy Jackson was written poorly because he was just a new writer and it is not a very high reading level. If you you like Rick Riordan's books then I would strongly suggest the Kane Chronicles by Rich Riordan. They are pretty thick books that he wrote so beautifully so it would be great for a log period of time. In addition it is about two siblings whose father magically diapered so there is like no romance that I can remember ( brother and sister). Unlike Percy Jackson is Greek?? mythology the Kane Chronicles is Egyptian mythology.
I personally have started to read the False prince series that my friend said she LOVED. Currently I am 1/2 through the 2nd book and there had not been any romance. But don't quote me on that for the third book because I have not read it yet. I have a suspicion about a potential love interest but right now the girl that might be... hates him. So.... I don't know. But again there has been no romance yet.
The maze runner series is also one that does not have a lot of romance in it. There is a little in the 2nd book but it is quickly back to friends after that ( I will not tell you why, that could spoil the whole book and that would be a terrible.) But there is a lot of fights in this book. It does not really describe any of " the gore" but it says that there was one so.... what ever you think is best
I love to read and love to give people ideas on books so... thank you ... I am so bored right no with the corona so I am glad I had something to do these last 5 mins.
Also another one I love that my 9 year old sister is starting to read is called the Janitor Series by Tyler Whiteside. It is about a boy and a girl ( no romance there just friends) who can see things in there school that most normal students can not see. They are what prevent students from learning in there school but there janitor can see them too. They have to defeat these creatures before they take over schools so no one can learn.... I know it sound really weird but I really enjoyed them.

dot ♡ (offmydot) Rick Riordan is great, and I'd also suggest the Spy School series by Stuart Gibbs. It's middle grade rather than YA but I loved them all through middle school, and fits right into the "adventure and spy books" theme!

No worries. I hope He likes them :)

Ashi✿TheAvidReader | 322 comments I would also recommend Rick Riordan's books. And also Artemis Foul(by Eoin Colfer).

message 11: by Josephine (new)

Josephine | 5 comments Oo what about An Unfortunate Series of Events by Lemony Snicket?
Its a series so it would take a bit of time to read and i remember loving them when i was younger. Its a bout 3 kids and this evil guy, so definitely no romance and I’m pretty sure there’s no profanities etc.
There’s also a movie so if he liked the books he could watch the movie after. :))

Oooh definitely the Maze Runner! I really enjoyed them and I was addicted. I read the whole series pretty fast. It's very fast paced and an adventure book. All the characters are awesome too!

Lucia | 40 comments Hmm, for a nine year old? Counting by sevens was an amazing book, but it is middle grade, but I loved it soooo much, such a great story. Nevermoor is somewhat similar to Harry Potter, and it is a series, really loved that too, although it is middle grade. Scythe is a YA series, one of my favorite series so far. It is written sooo well with a great plot, although has a tiny bit of romance in the second and third books. These books are definitely worth looking into.

Dalia | 183 comments I second Spy School. The Maze a Runner might be too old for a nine year old.

message 15: by Alonsonia (new)

Alonsonia (alonsonia) Gallagher Girls series by Ally carter

message 16: by Lucia (new)

Lucia | 40 comments Edge of Extinction is really good, but I only read the first book. It is a middle grade series.

Zara | 245 comments The hunger games!!!!

message 18: by Na’Mya (new)

Na’Mya | 9 comments “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” by Jenny Han is really good and it doesn’t have any mature scenes from the first two books I read and i’m pretty sure the third is the same.

Well if he liked Percy Jackson, you should try Heroes of Olympus and Trials of Apollo that are two series that come right after :)
Though you probably already heard about them xD

Jody Cleven | 1 comments Jody ClevenHi Christee-I'm an author of clean books for ages 9-14. My first book, A Ripple in Maggie Pond (2019) has girls as the main characters. So, although it's a book packed with drama and really neat for that "avid reader" kid (the characters LOVE books), it may not be as boyish. Although, there is a really cool boy character.

On the other hand, my second book (just released last week!), Ribbon on the Willow has a boy as the main character. It's a great story that your guy might really love.

Again, it is my mission to write clean books, while at the same time not watering down the story. There are no swear words in A Ripple in Maggie Pond, and just one (mild) in Ribbon on the Willow. It kinda has to be there. Read it and you'll see!

I am a Christian (living in NC), and I've put some really sweet "Christian" scenes in both books. In both stories some of the characters learn about the "Saving Grace" without it being too heavy, though. I wrote them so that they could also be okay in a public school, so not any heavier than "Because of Winn-Dixie" or "Best Christmas Pageant Ever" type story lines.

My author's website is jodycleven.com. If he reads, and then wants to write to me, I promise I'll write back. A snail mail address is given on the website. The fun part about that (spoiler here) is that the girls in my first book write to an author and great things happen! I hope you give them a try! Both available on Amazon. Enjoy! -Jody
