I read the book around 2003-2004 in school, and it was written for an 8th/9th grade reading level.

Spoilers ahead.

The book was about a young African woman going through puberty and falling in love. I believe that she fell in love with an older man (I think her teacher) and she tried to hide getting her period because her parents wanted her to marry an elder, but they found out.

They run off to the big city, where she marries. I believe she becomes pregnant and dies in childbirth.
