PIFM - Chat/Banter/Review Your August 2020 Read
I finished my July PIFM Thanks for voting it!My review:
https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I'll get around to the August thread in a bit
HI Everyone!Could I be a pain and ask people to go back and vote for July for me! lol
I'd love to participate this month coming! I will try and add some for august this week too!
I appreciate it...I have been meaning to get back here for so long!
Thank you to anyone who can :)))
@ Amy, we really are too early for this thread anyway. Glad you're back!@Tonya, I really had a hard time choosing bwtn Green Mile and Night Film! I'm up for a buddy read if you like any of my winning memoirs for August
@Sarah-thanks for you vote!
@ Perri, I would love to buddy read with you if my library opens back upon time for me to get the book..it still has a sign up closed until further notice.
I'm not holding my breath for our library opening. You won't believe how stupid people around here are. Barely 50% of people at the grocery store are wearing masks. Our governor has mandated them but there are sheriffs refusing to enforce the order. Since when has public health become political?
That’s crazy Kirsten if it’s mandated. It’s wild how many people think it’s just a conspiracy theory and refuse to change anything. The numbers are pretty low here now but I’m still not doing much. Better to be safe than sorry Our libraries are doing curb side pick up which is fine by me
I finally received a copy of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and now I know the why and how of the 7 marriages-haha. I loved it, my first and probably only 5 star of this month. Another great choice my dear PIFMers :)https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I feel like I'm late for August already...?! I haven't been reading as much as normal since the schools closed in March as much of my time has been taken up with homeschooling (and welcoming a new puppy to the family) so I haven't posted anything for a while but I'm hoping with the summer holidays starting on 17th July I can spend my days on the beach or in the garden catching up on my reading while I work on my tan!
I wonder what fresh craziness August will bring?!Mandy, Dana mom :) and Patricia, please vote (in case you missed me)

You’re right, Perri. I’m also behind on reading GR friends’ reviews. It’s not like I don’t have time. I’m just a terrible procrastinator. 🙄
I am forced to stay indoors and read since it is too hot to pull weeds. Brenda, thanks for the "like" regarding my review.

You’re welcome, Patricia. As for gardening, I got mulch put down before this heatwave hit, and we are parched here. Even the weeds aren’t doing well. 😂

Lucky you...I have grasses that are shedding seeds. Even the birds are getting fat...
Hi everyone. I’m having internet issues so haven’t been on as much. Like many of you u CoVid is taking its toll in diverse ways. Here in Ontario masks are only mandatory at the municipal level and I agree ...when exactly did masks become political? People are being so aggressive on both sides of the argument especially in a county like mine where masks have not been voted mandatory but 30 minutes away in one city they are mandatory for public transportation and salons ONLY...but not Costco for example. Thirty minutes another direction to our other close city they are not required at all and forty five minutes to our third closest city ...(and a new county) they are 100 percent mandatory. Ahhhh the pleasures of escaping into a book right now is sublime.
I will head over and vote. Maybe even put up a list.
Melanie, having Internet issues would be the last straw for me! TG for being able to read books online while the library was closed and maintaining at least some social connections! I hope you get that straightened out soon. Where I live wearing masks is pretty universally agreed as necessary, but that doesn't mean every one does. There's still heated debate. So I can imagine how hard it would be in an area like yours with lots of different rules. What I notice is how differently people interact when you can't see half their face. I wonder if there will be a long term effect
In London the face mask issue seems to be fairly evenly split. It’s mandatory to wear them on public transport and now that the city seems to be opening up at an alarming rate some stores have adopted a mask policy but the general public seem not have made their own majority decision one way or the other really. Boris Johnson seems to be issuing rather contradictory rules which is causing a lot of impatience over here. For example we can go to work on crowded public transport, go to bars and catch a flight to Greece/Spain/France for a holiday without the need for a quarantine but can only meet up with one other household in the local park at a distance of 2m and still can’t see our families at home...
Sophie, our Governor in California has closed all of the wineries - except his. Thank heavens the stores are adequately stocked with other choices. I personally like Beringer. It appears some of these decisions are obviously political.
I am back from 2 weeks in the Black Hills of South Dakota. We were in our motorhome so we did social distancing/self isolating. What an amazing and beautiful place. Absolutely loved it there. I will be voting and posting my list for August today.
Tonya, glad you liked it so much! I did too, one of my fav King books and I like so many of his that's saying a lot. Vicki welcome home! Was it crowded? What did you see? I visited there a long time ago and mostly I remember the nice weather. A real relief from the humidity! And the different color gold
Perri,It was not crowded because we mostly stayed in state campgrounds in our motorhome.
Mt Rushmore WAS crowded and it was crazy because almost noone was wearing masks. It was like a different planet than the COVID planet for sure.
We also saw Crazy Horse, Custer State park, bison and big horn sheep, the Badlands, Deadwood, Sturgis, Spearhead Canyon.
We did a lot of hiking in the forest and along the rivers.
The weather was unseasonable cool, Only a couple days in the 90's and we had some thunder and lightning and rain (almost unheard of in southern California!)
A great trip and an area I would recommend. One of the prettiest places on the planet.
Hello again. Had the internet guy here today and ... so far I’m connected. Hooray!Sophie it is very similar here I think to what you are experiencing with contradictions in the rules. We just went into Phase 3 of the opening which feels very much like “do whatever”. The future sure looks interesting.
I’m off to check votes and vote for anyone I missed. Fingers crossed my rural internet issues are behind me.
Vicki, you broke my vote thanks! Wow you saw a lot! They should put big masks on the presidents to remind people hahaMelanie are your numbers going down? They backed off going to phase 3 here when the numbers started to rise after the holiday crowds
Good luck with the internet Melanie. That is so frustrating! It looks like school is going to be starting for me online. I am so bummed. I really wanted to go back. I don't like having to sit in front of the computer for hours on end! They have committed to the first week (at least) online. Hopefully we can go back in person with the right precautions. The kids NEED to be in school. For me personally, I feel safe and fine to go back in the classroom with them.
My list is up if you can go vote for me before the end of the month. Thanks!
Vicki, what grade do you teach? I wonder why the private & charter schools are not apprehensive about opening. I bet many parents will be inquiring about getting their kids accepted at one of them. I agree that children need in person teaching & are supposedly safe from the virus.

Patricia wrote: "Vicki, what grade do you teach? I wonder why the private & charter schools are not apprehensive about opening. We have gotten many notices from parents saying they are taking their kids out of our school because we are not opening. We will see how many actually do so or if it is all talk. I work in an urban area which is about 60% socioeconomically disadvantaged.
I still think we should open and can find a safe way to do so. But, as the norm - no one listens to teachers. :(
Hi guys! The September and October threads have been posted. Could you please try to stick to one month at a time please to avoid confusion to any newcomers. I know you guys have it down and are really helpful to any new participants ..... but ..... you know what I'm saying!!
Hope you're all keeping really well and if you could sprinkle some reading mojo my way I'd appreciate it. My mojo has deserted me *sigh*
Have fun with your selections! :)

Patricia wrote: "I have finished my winner,
Barefoot to Avalon: A Brother's Story. How about you."How did you like it Patricia? It looked good to me, but not at my library or on Overdrive
Barefoot to Avalon: A Brother's Story is a very honest memoir. In fact, I don't believe I could personally reveal the sort of information David Payne did. The first part of the book was not as good as the final few chapters. I couldn't put that last part down. David Payne dreamed of being a poet and his language throughout the book indicated it. It was impressive.

PLEASE NOTE:
PIFM is meant to be FUN and not to be taken seriously. I would appreciate it if all participants just chilled and not get worked up about voting, who votes, who doesn't, etc. Please bear in mind that some will just want to vote, many don't come on everyday and most of us have time constraints. I just want a relaxed approach to it all and for you all to just enjoy the process! I'd really appreciate your courtesy in this matter. Many thanks.
