I know sometimes the Book of the Month may not be up your cup of tea and thats totally okay. There are no requirements to be part of any group read to be in COL.
I know however, that books are the binding force of this group. If you've noticed lately in the "Current Book Club" folder there has been the book of the month and there has also been another book running along with it. Some chicks decided a few months ago that they wanted to read some big chunky books that had been on their list and decided to support each other in these big endevours and read through a chunky book together. War and Peace, Count of Monte Cristo, Vanity Fair and they are currently getting ready to pick their next one. These discussions have been totally done by the power of chicks and they have been great. (Often they exceed the conversation going on in the Book of the Month discussion).
I know some others that really wanted to read The Handmaid's Tale have decided they are going to start a discussion in Nov (to coincide with her birthday) and read and discuss this book.
I LOVE to see these organic discussion groups sprout up.
If you are feeling like the books you want to read aren't being discussed I totally encourage you to bring it up in a thread and see if anyone else would like to read/discuss a book with you.
I feel like these discussions really bring people together and can also help you get through your TBR pile :)

Bloomin’Chick (Jo) aka The Eclectic Spoonie (bloominchick) I couldn't agree more Tera! I'm really trying to get things organized so I can have more time to devote to discussions like those. Things are a little all over the place right now. (I've never been good at organizing my time and now with Vic laid off, I'm so screwed up!)

Elizabeth (Alaska) I have enjoyed the discussion of Sarah's Key this month. It seems very worthwhile to start/join a discussion when any of us sees several reading the same book, or talking about the same book. I believe there was a discussion a couple of months ago about The Elegance of the Hedgehog. I didn't get in on that one, but may add my 2 cents when I read it in the next month or two. These "spontaneous" discussions are fun!
