I found that a strange novella -- how did you like it? Have you read other books by Spark?

message 9: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments @ Leslie: It is a 'strange' book and may not be for 'all'. But I found it very interesting and I liked Spark's style of writing and narrating the story.

This is my first novel of Muriel Spark. But I will be reading definitely more of her novels. Have you read many of her works? And what is your opinion of her?

I liked The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie Dhanaraj and Leslie.

message 11: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments I am planning to read all of her works, Greg.

message 12: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jan 24, 2015 03:26PM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I did not care for Memento Mori, but I too enjoyed The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. I recently bought a copy with illustrations by Beryl Cook. Apparently she had asked to do them, but it seems a very odd pairing!

message 13: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I have read several - The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, The Girls of Slender Means (which I just finished 'rereading' by listening to on BBC radio via the internet), Loitering With Intent (I think this might be my favorite), and A Far Cry from Kensington. Memento Mori was by far the oddest!

message 14: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Thanks Leslie and Jean. Spark seems to be an interesting writer. I will read all the titles that you mentioned.

How was it then Dhanaraj?

message 23: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments It was an Okay read. It was not a great story but an engaging one. The focus was on the female situation in the 1940. It was interesting to know few things.

I loved the book and the story. It is like a fable. But the descriptions and the simple message (Christmas) made it as one of my all time favourites.

message 30: by Gill (new)

Gill | 5719 comments I'll move it up near to the top of my list then, Dhanarah.. I'm looking forward to listening to it.

Aha you've discovered Sara Maitland... Any thoughts?

message 35: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments @ Tweedledum: Stations of the Cross was the first book by Sars Maitland that I read. I loved it. Last week I placed an order for her novel, Daughter Of Jerusalem. Have you read many of her books?

message 36: by Tweedledum (new)

Tweedledum (tweedledum) | 2167 comments I read Walking on the Water many years ago and thought it very good. I also have Virtuous Magic: Women Saints And Their Meanings but have sadly never got around to reading it.

message 37: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Dhanaraj, you seem to be reading quite a bit by Muriel Spark this year, how do you like her books?

message 38: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments @ Jenny: I like the way Muriel Spark develops the plots and the language. It is very witty and her satire is absolute fun. She hits the message with a tinge f humour. Also I like the theme of religion that invariably appears in every one of her book. She is a Catholic but not a conventional Catholic. She questions everything about Catholicism. She brings out her own notions of belief. I like reading her thoughts.
P.S. If you want to try her book, try it in the original language. You might like her.

I've read Loitering With Intent by her and liked it very much, so I will surely try another one by her some time.

message 41: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments @ Jenny: I am yet to read the book that you mentioned. But I have her The Bachelors waiting in my book rack. By the way, I am collecting all her works.

How is it? I'm usually ... not disappointed, "infastidita" by Waugh's books. How would you say that in English? Annoyed?

message 44: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments @ Laura T: Why do you get annoyed of his writings? Anyway, I can not reply for I have read just a book by him. It was very slow and was irritating at the beginning but halfway through I got used and enjoyed reading it.
