How are you liking those so far? I loved how much each character surprises me in those. Like, they all end up different than what I'd originally expected.

Yes, I completely understand that. When I got to the end of her Throne of Glass series, I think it broke me for a little while. I just...couldn't read anything. But I love it so hard.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Just finished Embers (Dark in You, #4) by Suzanne Wright and I really liked that baby. Actually, I liked the whole book except for one thing. I really dislike these very strong heroines who cannot say they want to be sexually dominated and why in this book is it always a Fu#$? It is frustrating to me like what is wrong with wanting to have a guy pin you down during sex? As an author, I am sure Suzanne Wright can write the scene way better you know keep it romantic and have her give voice to it. All this I know she wants it so I am gonna do it ...just does not feel so sexy to me.

I think that's an excellent point. For some reason there's this misconception that characters have to fit into a certain character-mold. As if we can't identify with them for one part of their personality being at odds with their decisions.

We're all complicated. I like it better when people are written as contradictions. It feels more real, you know?

Nerdy Werewolf (nerdywerewolf) I'm currently up to Death's Rival (Jane Yellowrock, #5) by Faith Hunter in the Jane Yellowrock series. So far, it's been an interesting adventure. Lots of things stand out as different from other stories in this genre.

It hasn't gotten to the point where I can't do anything but finish the book, yet. Here's hoping.

Can you maybe compare that series to any other series? For instance, is it anything like Slave to Sensation (Psy-Changeling #1) by Nalini Singh ?

I'm not sure I ever felt like that with Jane books. I was always wanting to read more, but I don't remember losing sleep. Great series, it just evoked different feelings in me than some others.

message 1125: by Dawn, Desperately seeking new worlds (new)

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments Holly wrote: "...Can you maybe compare that series to any other series? For instance, is it anything like ..."

No not really. Breeds are genetically engineered in labs and they are part human and part animal. The series began as an erotic novel and then grew to develop a decent plot line which surrounds the Breeds trying to get newly created Breeds out of labs and other humans from learning more about them and exploiting them.

Though there are some common elements like being mated with lots of adventure and comradery between factions.

Sandra | 4736 comments Holly, Breeds is very similiar to Laurann Dohner's New Species books. Breeds was written first. First one in New Species is Fury (New Species, #1) by Laurann Dohner

I'm close to being finished with Death's Rival (Jane Yellowrock, #5) by Faith Hunter now and I think I'm more invested than I noticed I was? A few things have happened to Jane I that make me want to stick around and see how they get resolved.

Even if it takes another 6 books. LOL.

@Dawn/Sandra,

I'm mainly into urban fantasy, but I'm trying to branch out and I love almost any story about shifters. I've read most of the Psy-Changeling series and really enjoyed it, but that's as far as I've made it in the PNR genre.

I'm also a fan of really long book series (only if the author keeps writing, you know...). So, would you recommend either of those to someone in my position?

Tempting the Beast (Breeds, #1; Feline Breeds, #1) by Lora Leigh Fury (New Species, #1) by Laurann Dohner

Great example I knew there was another series but for the life of me I could not recall the name.

Holly wrote: "...I'm also a fan of really long book series (only if the author keeps writing, you know...). So, would you recommend either of those to someone in my position?

I like them both but I think I liked Tempting the Beast a bit more.
My honest suggestion would be to read the introduction on amazon and whichever one grabs you go for it. If you like one series you will probably like the other.

message 1131: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

Sandra | 4736 comments And both series have lots of books. I like Breeds better as well, simply cause I read it first & some of them actually touched me whereas I enjoyed New Species but it was a bit formulaic.

LastBreath (last_breath) | 243 comments Currently reading Visions by Kelley Armstrong. I'm kinda bummed because the last few years I've been relying on Kindle and Goodreads for recommendations. Not that GR does a bad job but at no time did I find the Cainsville series. I literally stumbled across it when going through our local library. I'm glad I had taken a breather that day to explore more than just the coffee barista and newspaper tables.

message 1135: by Chrissy (new)

Chrissy (bookwormchrissy) | 32 comments I feel like Cainsville is really underrated. But those of us who love it are around on goodreads somewhere lol. I've actually managed to convince a few people to read this series. It's always great to hear about more people discovering one of my favorites. Hope you keep enjoying the series and I'm always happy to talk about these characters. I'm probably due for a reread of the series soon with the final novella coming out in two months.

Marge (memarge2) | 9 comments I've just started reading the Highland Gazette series by A. D. Scott. The main characters are Joanne Ross and John McAllister. The "hook" in this series is that it takes place in the 1950s. The book I am reading and enjoying is A Small Death in the Great Glen.

The heroine, Morrigan is like the worst I cannot finish this book fast enough. I mean she is really dumb even worse she is annoying! I actually feel sorry for the hero Ualan and this is his one shot at marriage, is this bratty harpie.

Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I just finished Wild Country (The World of the Others, #2; The Others, #7) by Anne Bishop

This was a fun and original book. I loved the frontier vibe and I thought it was an interesting turn of events to have so many human swindlers.

I'm on the second book of the All Souls Trilogy. I like it and all, but I don't think I like it as much as most people.

DGC I know im SO late to the game but i figured id try to read as many sookie stackhouse books before my trip to Louisiana and now i'm totally hooked. i have 11 more to get through and im worried what happened with Karen Marie Moning's Fever series is going to happen with the sookie books, amusing you all have read the sookie books is there a better stopping point that to read through the 13th book? I have read a bunch of negative feedback on the last book but i haven't been able to read too many reviews because i don't want to spoil anything.

Mostly people were unhappy with who Sookie ended up with. By the time we got to the end I was ok with things, it made sense.

I thought it funny how upset people got. We all need to remember...it's the author's choice, not ours, we just get to enjoy the books. But with that being said, I have found myself upset when reading different books. lol

message 1148: by Sandra, Need more time to Read!! (new)

I just finished this one, too! Gawd, I love that series. I was really intrigued by the clan of con-men, too. What a great angle in that setting. I think all the side-storylines about the puppy were my favorite parts, though.

Oh yes i've read that, i mean i'm just saying if she DOES end up with Eric i'll be happy. I loved the show but i'm finding that the books are much better (isn't that usually the case). Sookie is a MUCH better character in the books, the show did not do her justice at all.
