Children's book - mystery, adventure
Plot: girl sees painting of a Spanish Dauphinesse cone to life in her bedroom at night.
Discovers smugglers in fancy dress use a tunnel behind the painting to reach a cave to bring in contraband.
Can't recall there being a cover illustration.
Black and white illustrations of some scenes

Pebble | 5 comments No not a Five book, thanks for suggesting, I can see similarities but this was definitely a girl on her own

Rainbowheart | 28672 comments Do you think it was a UK book?

How old is the girl in the story?

message 6: by Pebble (new)

Pebble | 5 comments Thank you both
I think the girl was 10-early teen. I think it was a UK book but may have been set in either England or Spain or maybe even Ireland if Spanish treasure was involved. I hadn't come across the word Dauphinesse before reading it and it fascinated me - she wore a lacy flamenco-type outfit

I have now looked at Secret of the Hidden Painting and ruled it out

Rosa (rosaiglarsh) | 5384 comments It's new to me, too! But it's a French title. Could the painted girl have been French?

Pebble | 5 comments I remember it as Spanish, but was quite young

Pebble | 5 comments I have googled that Rosa, the only one I can find is a Peter and Jane book that is nothing like it, do you have an author please for any other one of the same title?

Rosa's post was a link. Holiday Camp Mystery by Margaret A. Cole.

It's available for limited review from the Internet Archive. You need to be a member to "take out" books, but membership is free; you only need to give them an e-mail address.

I'm pretty sure it's your book; there is a painting of a "Dauphiness" and a cave.

The Goodreads book page which Rosa linked above displays Holiday Camp Mystery (1959) by Margaret A. Cole. "A tale set in Butlin's Skegness, in the 1950s."
