SOLVED. 80s, Possibly 70s book about a boy who somehow stumbles upon a magician and becomes an apprentice, in real world. [s]

I can SEE The cover. I think it was just all in tans and browns though it may have just been old. He was walking along I think and somehow stumbled upon a sort of busy professor guy and I can't remember how, but he found out he practiced magic and the professor agreed to teach the boy. He had an assignment every week I think, and they involved things like thinking himself into a box? I don't remember there being a lot of other characters and it was pretty mellow - I don't remember there being any fantastical or otherworldly stuff other than these magic lessons. Single book, not a series. I searched "magic" and a number of other things in the group and looked at all the solved threads and followed the links and so far I haven't found it.
