ABANDONED. Fantasy - Robin Hood-esque, but not historical and with magic

Read this book in the mid-90's and wracking my brain to find it again. The book is narrated by a scholar recounting the story of his early life, I believe in a tavern. The hero in the story is a brigand who become a heroic, Robin Hood type character even though he is not a good person. He is compared to a legendary hero from the past. Another of the protagonists loses an eye and everyone begins comparing him to a companion of the legendary hero who was called the Cyclops. As the story comes to a conclusion, the scholar relates that everyone began to forget that the hero began as a criminal who was only in it for himself, and even those who knew him best didn't remember and got angry when he suggested it. A sorceress then transports the hero and his companions back in time to become the legendary heroes they resembled. The scholar finishes his story saying he's waiting for her because he's now the proper age to become the magician who assisted the legendary hero. I believe his final words were something to the effect of "And, oh Shade, I cannot wait to see him again"
