Our much-demanded second series readathon begins with Fablehaven by Brandon Mull

I've never read this before but I have definitely encountered it at least 3 times. I've tried to get into it in the past but it hasn't clicked for me and this time round I'm looking to change that!

The readathon continues with book 2 in July...

Reminder to all that the Fablehaven readathon is no longer active and the discussion has moved to here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Before we start reading let's gauge the general reaction to this readathon...
Have you read any of the books before? Or anything similar or anything else written by Brandon Mull? Or is this the first time you're ever hearing about this book and series?

message 4: by jessica (new)

jessica (abookishjess) | 616 comments i think i've heard of these (possibly) but i've never read them or anything by brandon mull!

message 5: by Kostas (new)

Kostas (kostasbooks) | 33 comments I've read his "five kingdoms" series and it was very interesting for the most part. So I'll give this a try.

Tree Bee Potato I am definitely going to participate in this read along! Sounds so fun and I just bought the first book!

@Jessica I came across the books in 2018 when which is when I first shelved it on my TBR but then I tried reading it later in 2019 and dnf'ed it!

@Kostas I've heard of that series too it's on my TBR like many many books😂 Let's hope this series is even more enjoyable for you than that one!

@ASparkOfSyd Yay! The more the merrier!

I've read all of fablehaven and and all the books that are out of its sequel series Dragonwatch. I've also read all the Beyonders books by Brandon Mull, book one of 5 kingdoms, and some of the Candy Shop Wars

maybe I shouldn't be here because I've already read this but I just want to say that Brandon Mull's books always get better. I liked fablehaven 1 but the series got slowly better and better for sure.

ObsidianSniper (protect18) so same as drago. i read everythin he said but the candy shop wars an read all 5 kingdom books. so i should also not be here. have fun peeps!

@Drago You're clearly a big Brandon Mull fan!🙌🏻 You can totally reread it with us if you want to! A couple of people reread Lockwood & Co with us during that readathon.

@Stormborn same! You can reread it with us if you want to! Everyone is welcome! You can even just join in with the discussion without rereading it pop in every now and then and discuss the books whilst we read them each month...

ObsidianSniper (protect18) inkay thanks. i shall try!

Ilsen Leon | 382 comments I have heard about this middle grade series multiple of times but I never picked up this author so this will be the first time. Also I’m going to try to catch up with Lockwood and Co while I’m reading Fablehaven!!

Elizabeth (hufflepugtato) | 106 comments I've only ever read the first book and thought it was ok. Hopefully I like it more with this reread

@Ilsen I love how you're still trying with Lockwood😂 I would too but I need to read Percy Jackson for the quiz, still got a ton to write for CYOA and I don't have to read this book but it'll be nice to follow along this time.

@Elizabeth hopefully you do like it more this time round!

Ilsen Leon | 382 comments Listen, at this point, my friend has read more Lockwood and Co. than I have and there’s a TV series that we want to watch together. This is a personal mission XD

Everybody ready to start reading this crazy book? I'm downloading my ebook copy as we speak!

⚘ Its me Irina the READER ⚘ | 68 comments @Kadi how do you get your book of the month so fast? DO you get it off amazon and wait for it to come? Or do you use a kindle?

Audrey (niceyackerman) | 189 comments I re-read it a few months ago, but it's fresh in my mind.

I may... or may not... pirate... possibly... I cannot confirm nor deny this😬 The books we're reading lately (like Percy Jackson) I have physical copies for so that's why I have them ready to read so quickly. But also quite a few books we've read in the past I already had digital copies of because I'd either downloaded it before and thought I'd read it but didn't or have already read it before (like with the lockwood & co books and Fablehaven too because I tried reading it in 2019). Unfortunately libraries are not a thing that exist in this country and books are expensive so I have to make do with digital books. I always want to support authors but sometimes there is no way for me to do that. I'd honestly love love love to be able to read more physical books from a library but sadly that's not an option for me😭

😱Can't wait to see what you think of it! I stiiiill have to read Percy Jackson so I think I'll probably read this book in the last 10 days of the month because I also have coursework essays to write😭 But can't wait to discuss it with you then!

Tree Bee Potato I can’t wait to discuss the book! So far nothing much is happening because i’m about 30 pages in at the moment of writing this. You will probably love Percy Jackson the writing is amazing and the plot just pulls you in. The character dynamics are amazing as well. Good luck on the essays, I’m sure you’ll do great!

Thanks! Really just want these essays to be over. I've been dragging them out since March!! Can I call you Syd? I'm lazy and typing ASparkOfSyd is a lot of effort😂
I think the character dynamics and dialogue are something I'm going to be surprised by because I always find when I reread a book that's really good in my memory there's some part of it that surprises me because it's not as good as I remember it to be... Starting it today officially (I know I've said that every day for the past 5 days😂 but this time I actually mean it) so we'll see soon!

Tree Bee Potato I understand the essay pain, for me the school year is coming to a close, but I am excited for next year. Of course you can call me Syd! I’m not the biggest fan of Fablehaven so far, but I will keep reading to see how I feel about it. Glad you starting it! 🙂

Yeah my university year is technically supposed to be over but I applied for an extension for my essays (twice) so I'm still doing them. Only 8 more days and then year 1 is over! Then I'll be free to read Fablehaven and see if I like it or not😂

Tree Bee Potato Yay! School is over and reading is on!

Wahooo🙌🏻🎉🎉

Tree Bee Potato Ah.... I think I may DNF Fablehaven, I am not feeling the plot or characters. Maybe I will switch to audiobook. Also, do you watch any BookTubers?

message 32: by Kadi, Creator (new) - added it

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 2554 comments Mod
Oh no! What a shame! I've heard that sometimes books like that are better as an audiobook so maybe try that! Personally I can't stand audiobooks because I can read faster than I hear and I'd just be on edge the whole time trying to concentrate on the words or else I'll not pay attention.
And no I don't watch any booktubers! Youtube is uncharted territory for me. It actually comes back to that reading faster than hearing problem that means I can't sit through a 10 minute video of someone talking out their review I'd rather read it. I've never understood the appeal of youtubers and that makes me sound so old😂 I swear I'm not a grandma or something!

Tree Bee Potato I am actually trying out audiobooks for the first time this week. I understand how the reading speed could interfere with the experience. On most audiobooks you can change the playback speed.
I understand YouTube isn’t for everyone! 🤣

I think it took me a while to get used to the writing style, but I really enjoyed it. It's very creative.

I have also read the two Candy Shop War books (a third is promised), two Five Kingdoms books, and two Beyonders.

Brandon Mull is local to my area, so I've been able to see him a few times at signings and stuff.

Wow so you're a Brandon Mull expert then!! Also that's so cool that you've met him at all let alone multiple times!

I'm starting this tomorrow or the day after👏🏻 I'm determined to follow this readathon😂

How many people have read this book for our readathon? With so many new members it's hard for me to gauge how many people are following along! Respond with a little 🙌🏻 to show you've read book 1!!

message 40: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee (seascapeblueskies) I haven't yet, because I have just joined, but I would love to read them all. So, I will read #1 as quickly as I dare, so I can start #2.

Don't worry Dee, I've been here since before the group was even public (because I set it up😂) and I still have not read book 1🤦🏻‍♀️😂 It's on my July list of books that I made though so I MUST READ IT THIS MONTH!!!

message 42: by Dee (new) - rated it 4 stars

Dee (seascapeblueskies) I am slowly getting through it, and it is not like any fantasy book I have read before. It is really fun, with lots of surprises, and twists, and turns. Sometimes, I wish that I were one of the children in the book.

That would definitely be an awesome escape from quarantine, that's for sure! Glad you're enjoying it so far Dee! I love a book with good plot twists👏🏻

Dee (seascapeblueskies) I am halfway through, and I really am enjoying this story of the two children, and their grandfather's very intriguing home. I just want to read more!
