SOLVED. Children's book about Siamese cat legend. [s]

I read this children's book between 1988 and 1991 when I was working in my local library in Washington state. The book was published in English. It took place in Siam and told the story of how the Siamese cat came to have a rough, scratchy voice and a crook at the end of its tail when it went out hunting for a lost child. If I remember correctly there was a picture of the child (a little boy) and the cat on the cover. It took place in rice paddies and the child became lost while the parents were harvesting rice.
