Books with: Paranormal romance where the hero has thought processes more similar to animals than people

Hi all!

I'm looking for some paranormal/urban fantasy/sci-fi romance books (shifter, alien, adult, YA; I don't mind) where the hero thinks more like an animal than a man.

I find it charming when the thought processes are animal-brain with animal reasoning. I'm especially looking for books with cute misunderstandings as a result of this i.e. he gives a girl a hunk of meat to court her, he gets confused about why she needs time to date, he struggles to understand complex human motivations etc.

Examples of this are Written in Red from The Others series by Anne Bishop and Bayou Moon by Ilona Andrews (and also probably most of the New Species books by Laurann Dohner).

It's not about an animal, but I thought of The Stranger by Caroline B. Cooney - I don't want to give too many spoilers, but the hero is sort of a shifter and has the qualities of a creature from nature uncertain about the human world that you're looking for

I saw the title and came in to recommend The Others series by Anne Bishop, but I see you beat me there! I don't know of anything quite like that, but if you haven't already, you might want to check out Anne Bishop's Black Jewel Trilogy. Daughter of the Blood is the first one. The series takes a bit to get into, but into the second and third book you meet the kindred, who are animals who have the ability to communicate with the human characters when they choose to. But they are animals, and their reasoning and logic is different from human reasoning and logic.

But Archangels Enigma is exactly that ‘more animal than human’ that you are looking for. Naasir is awesome. It is book 8 in the series tho, and they are all worth reading imo.

Thank you Not-Mary! I read the Keeper of the Wolves and it was very sweet. I found that the heroes thought patterns turned more 'human' the longer he was in human form but I loved that he retained his relationship with all the wolves.

Thank you Kristy! I read When She's Bold and really like the big, shy, hero trope. I always wish for more plot in these novellas though! Thank you so much for the recommendation.

Hi MJ,

I completely forgot about Archangel's Enigma but I have read it before and really liked it! I get sick and tired of all the debonair hot-cold game-playing vampires in PNR so the ones where the hero is a bit more naive and monster-y are always a treat.

Mating the Huntress is another good one where the hero is not really clued in on how to court a human. And unfortunately for him, his human wants to murder him.
