Kelly | 235 comments I am on page 79. I forgot how emotionally draining the books are and how you can't put them down. My heart bleeds every time Bree reads a letter from Jamie and Claire. So far I have this great sense of doom. Lots of death and talk of death.

Cheryl Clark (cherlark) | 9 comments Including Brianna, Roger and the kids in the beginning of the book was confusing to me because ABOSAA ended with them in Scotland in the present. But, It didn't take me long to recognize the retelling of the scene at the dock with William and Lord John. Now, it all makes sense. :)) I am already as emotionally invested in this book as I was at the end of ABOSAA.

Amy Osborn | 17 comments I'm on page 199 and am SO happy with it so far. A couple of hints for the future already. I thought I would race through it, but I agree with Gam26, reading slowly and savoring it!

Tracy (mamallama) | 7 comments I bought my copy at B&N yesterday and started to read, but realized I am going to need time without distractions to read. I am not going to comment till I'm done, but I'm thinking I should have re-read ABOSAA before starting but I'm starting to remember things.....I love it!

message 11: by ChristinaRae (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments I'm barreling through, 'cause I can't wait to know!! (I'll go back for a slower re-read to savor the details) I'm not sure if this book will be one of my favorites; I was hoping to love William for his own sake and not merely his father's . . . maybe he'll impress me later; I'm only a little more than half way through. The Brianna/Roger/kids story line is my favorite so far.

Erika Boncz (erikaboncz) | 64 comments I got mine last night, so far so good, though I haven't had any problems putting it down (unlike some of the other books), but I am only on page 100 and most got really page turning latter on in the book.

message 13: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) I caved and got the ebook. I couldn't wait lol. Enjoying it so far and finding it hard to put down every time I have to do something. Wishing I could read more grr.

Cjhays (cjh53) | 8 comments Don't have mine yet. My father-in-law pre-ordered it for my birthday, and he got an e-mail that it had shipped, and was expected to arrive on the 25th. That's my 15th anniversary, so I don't guess it would be too nice to start reading it then. I'll have to wait a few days, but I'm really eager to start!

Kelly | 235 comments Pg. 126 laughing at young Ian. I just can't believe the smile that this book puts on my face.

Anyone feel like Jamie and Claire have aged in this book?

How old do you think they are in Echo?

I'm guessing about 52 for Jamie and 57 for Claire?

Wendy | 259 comments I started my copy late, but so far I really like it. In a couple of the other books I felt that they moved slow and not much happened for a while in the book. but this one seems to be moving right along.

Hey, did anyone catch the reference that Diana added to Echo about the dauchsund? I thought that appropriate with her owning two.

Cheryl Clark (cherlark) | 9 comments Michelle wrote: "Just finished An echo in the Bone. I thought this was the last book? Or am I missing a chapter!!!????"

There will be an 8th book. But, it will probably be several years down the road. Plenty of time to reread the other seven books!

message 19: by CaliGirlRae (new)

CaliGirlRae (rae_l) Is 8th the last one? Or are there two more after this? I can't remember how many books were coming up cause I kept hearing different numbers. :-(

message 22: by Kendall (new)

Kendall (kendalln) I have the ebook and am totally loving it. I never re-read books but I think when I finish Echo I will re-read the whole series. Can't get enough of Jamie!

message 23: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 235 comments I just read a review for Echo. They said they would recommend reading the Lord John books if you haven't because there are quite a few characters that were only in Lord John and not the Outlander books. They also went on to say that they found Echo to be almost a sequel to both Lord John and Outlander. Anyone else agree? I have not read the Lord John books.

message 24: by Alicia (last edited Sep 28, 2009 07:29AM) (new)

Alicia Garcia | 63 comments Like all the other books, Echo is quite bittersweet. it breaks your heart and makes you smile like an idiot. I actually finished it last night, and it makes my chest hurt with how this particular book ended. Once again I am shocked with some of the things Claire, Jaime, and Ian are forced to do. Even Lord John shocks the hell out of me, and William is actually likable on his own terms but it's staggering the amount of things he doesn't know about his own birth, Brianna, and everything else. I love everyone so much in this book that it literally makes my heart squeeze because of some of the things that happen to them and some of the things they get swept up in. This book was amazing though, there isn't exactly a happily ever after but that's not really my thing.

message 25: by Sarah (last edited Sep 27, 2009 09:36PM) (new)

Sarah Dunahoo | 6 comments I agree that you should read the lord john books first because it is so exciting to see some of the characters in this book too.. I would have been lost if I wouldnt have read them. They are not very long and you can read them in a day. Jamie is in parts of them too:> and in brotherhood of the blade it gives you an outsiders look into some of what happens in the beginning of voyager with Jamie

Um, yes, Diana is something of a sadist, isn't she? There were a lot of unresolved events in the last 50 pages!! Moreso than any of the other books. This is definitely not the last book. I'd guess her publishers will take as many as she is willing to write, given her popularity.

You know, I wouldn't mind if there were five more books after this. However, these books are such an emotional roller coaster that they take their toll after a while. It's emotionally exhausting but I don't really mind. How long will it take the next book to come out? Does anyone know?

Kim | 2 comments I read quickly, and I have to go back and re-read everything, BUT where is Jemmy in the end?? Do we really not what happens with him?

And where is Roger at the end?

Jaime and Claire will certainly work things out. If he could forgive her for the king when he was alive, he can surely forgive her for lord john when she thought he was dead.

I like the idea of Ian falling in love with a healer too.

Janice Craft | 3 comments I bought the book Tuesday morning at 9am...finished at 10:47pm on Wednesday. Could NOT put it down! I'm angry about a few things...won't spoil anything in case people haven't finished it...and the last 20 pages or so were very disappointing. It felt like she rushed through it too fast. If she had expanded on the last 20 pages and made it into 40 or so, I think it would have been better. And the ending just drove me nuts!!

(Spoiler alert!)
There wasn't any real conclusion with the situation in the future. That particular sub-plot line was left unfinished, and is going to continue with it into the next book most likely.
The last time we saw Roger he was with William Buccleigh and I'm pretty sure they were on their way back to the past where they mistakenly thought Rob had taken Jemmy. But he was actually still in the future, locked in the same place where Brianna was locked when her male co-workers played that trick on her. She left it off where Jemmy was trying to get out because he remembers what Brianna told him about her own escape.

To be honest, I'm glad that part only lasted 20 pages because i seriously could not take anymore of what was happening with Claire. It was kind of disturbing and heart-breaking, so i'm glad she didn't give us more detail on that particular event.

message 34: by Erika (new)

Erika Boncz (erikaboncz) | 64 comments loved it, after a bit of a slow start it all came together and I read most of it all day on Sunday. The ending left me wanting more (and a bit mad) and I know that it will be another 3-4 years before we know whats going on.

message 35: by Crystal (last edited Sep 28, 2009 03:08PM) (new)

Crystal | 18 comments I am kicking myself for not reading The Lord John books. Although I have always respected him for his role in the books and what he meant for Jamie, I must admit that he has never been a favorite character for me, in his own right. I guess I got it in my head that he was a bit prissy (this comes from his encounter with Jamie when he was a teen) and have only mildly enjoyed reading his parts. So I never bothered reading his series. How stupid I have been. I should have trusted Diana Gabaldon to spin a story I would like about anything!

And then I wouldn't be sitting here...finished the book....and wondering who in the name of all that is holy ARE these people? All these references to Lord John's past! I hate not knowing, and therefore not getting the full effect of shock when characters show up. Wish she would have warned us, honestly.

Och...weel, dinna fash meself, I s'pose. I'll just have to read them now, and then re-read echo. Won't have much else to do for the next 4 years...

I agree LJG has not been a fav of mine. And I have not read his books. Part of the reason why is that apart from his relationship with Jamie I don't really feel like I know him.

message 37: by Crystal (new)

Crystal | 18 comments exactly how I feel. I don't really know him and I guess that is my fault for not reading his series. I guess the real shock was that so much of the beginning of this book was to do with him and his past, etc. I have been waiting 4 years to see Jamie and Claire, I missed them, and didn't have time to spend on LJG. Add to that the fact that I didn't know what the heck he was talking about anyway, ha.

I might have taken it differently if she had slipped him in a bit later in the novel, but throwing him out there from the start was a bit of shock.

message 38: by ChristinaRae (last edited Sep 28, 2009 04:34PM) (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments This book was really a Lord John/Outlander novel duo. I have read some of the LJ books and I still don't love him because he never opens up to anyone; even his lovers. He is an uptight Englishman! Claire's *relations* with Lord John made me feel dirty! (for Claire, at least) And I will quit reading the series if there's any hint of a Jaime-Claire-LJ menage-a-toi!!

Jamie would NEVER do that! But it really isn't up to him would DG do that?

message 40: by Emily (new)

Emily | 18 comments Just finished...am ready for the next one immediately! I hope it's closer to 3 years than 5... And is the next one the last one? I sincerely hope not...

So, do we think Fergus is related to Claire after Percy's revelations? (I'm thinking I'll need to read the Lord John books to really figure out what all his stuff was about...Can anyone who has read them confirm that they make his story line more clear?)

message 41: by Marie (last edited Sep 29, 2009 02:45PM) (new)

Marie Swartz | 7 comments Never would I have imagined being disappointed in the new Outlander book! I've never been part of an online discussion group before either, but I just have to vent! (Feeling the need to make known my bona fides: I have read and lived all the other books in the series a total of eight times...)
I was dumbfounded at the way the lives of Roger, Jem, and Brianna were just left hanging in what seems to me a very abrupt and inartistic way. At first, I was positive I had purchased a defective book - one with several chapters missing. At the end of D.G.'s previous books there were often story lines that were obviously 'to be continued', but these were crafted gracefully, and did not leave the reader (at least not this reader) with the feeling of having been rudely ripped off. For half of the book, I carried the intense anticipation of discovering what what to happen with the 'modern time' Lallybroch family.
As perfect as I found every other book in the Outlander series, it feels almost sacreligious to criticize the author, but it seems like she might have felt the pressure of how long it was taking the finish the darn thing, and told out the last few chapters as fast as she could, (compressing by at least half what would have been wonderful reading, and then, at the last minute, also decided to heck with Roger and Jem, they can wait till the next book.
Well, at least I have vented.

No, Beauchamp is Percy's assumed name. He was Percy Wainright in LJ and the Brotherhood of the Blade. (That LJ book would probably be the most helpful to read for Echo) I don't think Beauchamp is the name of the family that is claiming Fergus, either. His father is supposed to be the Comte St. Germain; remember the one that assaulted Claire and Mary in DIA? I suppose Diana might connect them to Claire somehow; her books certainly encompass a small, small world. I personally thought Jack Randall's adopted son would play a larger part in Echo.

message 44: by Emily (new)

Emily | 18 comments It seems like maybe the adopted son will turn up in the next one. And I think Fergus' reported mother was a Beauchamp, wasn't she? Percy's would-have-been sister-in-law? (I guess he took the family name, in that case, rather than the other way around..?)

message 45: by Wendy (last edited Sep 29, 2009 09:29PM) (new)

Wendy | 259 comments I have puposely not been reading too closely what all of you have been writing so that I could read my book without any preconceptions. Now that I have finished, I think that some of us have been a little harsh in our critisizim (sp). Diana has definately left some very wide openings in the book for continueing the story. Though when she has done this is past books, she always tied everything up for us later. I have faith that she will do it again.

I too am a little frustrated that she didn't tie things up nicely, but where is the fun in that? Now we have a lot of time to speculate about where all this will go.

I was really pleased that the book moved along so well. I felt in a couple of the other books that they moved so slowly. There seemed to be just the right amount of story and detail this time.

message 46: by ChristinaRae (new)

ChristinaRae | 295 comments Maybe what we're really peeved about is that it took us all about a week to blow through the book and now we have a lot of waiting to do!

message 47: by Wendy (new)

Wendy | 259 comments Your probably right. Now we all wait. SAD:(

message 48: by Beth (new)

Beth | 4 comments Just had to join this group, having just finished Echo last night. I've read the first 6 books 3 times and love them all. I just can't believe how this booked ended. I couldn't go to sleep last night for hours, thinking how just wrong it ended. I was enjoying the book and couldn't put it down like all the others, but...
First of all I just can't believe Claire leaving Jamie in Scottland, they never have left each other willingly since she came back.
Second, I can maybe see why she had to marry LJ, but to sleep with him. Made me sick to my stomach! Just too sad.
Third, leaving Jamie and Claire like that was terrible. I know they will work it out, but...
And, to leave us hanging so with regards to Jem and Roger. I just can't stand it!
I truly hope Diana's going to get the 8th book written really soon. Like in a year, there is just too much left hanging to make us wait 3 or more years!

message 49: by Gam26 (new)

Gam26 | 22 comments Ok with everything in the last 50 pages my mind could have grapped hold of it chose "what dead girl in France?!" I loved the idea that Jamie had vowed to protect Claire because he was in love with her when he married her not to make up for some girl in France. And did he lie about being a virgin? I know there are much bigger problems to worry about, like Claire sleeping with John, but I have a bad feeling about this girl.

to that and saying huh? Re-reading....finally moving on, like a first
grader with a big word! Thinking maybe it will make sense later?
Glad you brought that up.
