I just finished an ARC of Every Anxious Wave, a time-travel romance for radioheads, due out in February. I really enjoyed it, mostly because of this new author's skill in creating believable characters. My review is here.
Just finished Nothing. It was quite disturbing but I enjoyed it all the same ! Now re-reading The Hound of the Baskervilles :)
I'm revisiting some of the classic private-eye novels by James Crumley. I recently finished The Last Good Kiss and then The Wrong Case. I understand Crumley was a major inspiration for Dennis Lehane, one of my favorite authors. The Crumley books are characterized by crisp writing, broken people and lots of booze. I seldom return to his books eager to learn what happens next. I just enjoy floating on his prose.
Just finished 2 rather unsatisfactory reads.....The House Among the Laurels
, my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show..., and No One Needs To Know
. Here is my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Somewhere in the late night I started The Dead Letter and The Figure Eight, two mystery novels from the 1860s written by Metta Fuller Victor.

The Last Good Kiss made me want to wash my hands after reading it. Tawdry!!

It was vulgar -- and that's being generous -- but the world he created was true to itself and the writing was first rate. The book's opening line sets the scene and lets you know what you're in for. Plus it is, I believe, one of the best openings in detective literature.
Nancy, The Black Dahlia is another wonderfully-written book. It's gritty, too, but not so over the top as Crumley's stuff.

In these days, I finished The Sky Lords and The Sandman, Vol. 4: Season of Mists. I'm listening Out of Tune, nice collection of tales inspired by folk ballads. I hope to finish this evening.

I've read that one like three times. It's one of my favorites.

Loved the movie, but thought it would probably spoil the book. What do you think?

I saw the movie and then read the book and I had no issues. Believe me, I'd tell you if I had.

Agreed.

Both are very good but you should not try to compare them. If you think of them as two different stories you'll be able to appreciate them both. The book (along with The Black Dahlia and the other books in his L.A. Quartet) serve to tell the story of Los Angeles during those years using these four novels as the medium.
I finished Secondhand Souls
by Christopher Moore. In this kooky comic novel (the sequel to A Dirty Job) Charlie Asher and his team must once again confront dark forces from the Underworld . 3.5 stars. My complete review:
