Amy (thenikitagirl) | 587 comments I just finished Method 15/33 by Shannon Kirk and found it to be great in the end. An interesting premise that I would most definitely recommend. Found it a little slow to start but once I was into it just had to finish. Short, easy read.

Finished Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories. Loved every second of it. Finally starting Undermajordomo Minor and also The Forgotten Rebels of Eureka.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 831 comments I'm currently reading The Icarus Agenda which is by Robert Ludlum. So far it has been very good--a Colorado congressman travels to Oman where the US embassy is being held hostage. Before that I finished Cold City by F. Paul Wilson. It's the first in a prequel trilogy to his Repairman Jack series. I really liked it--I gave it four stars.

His is an inspirational story for all writers who self-publish and use the internet to share their writing. This novel went from being self-published to an award-winning published novel and a big movie deal.

From the trailers it looks like it will be a fun movie. What is nice too is NASA is very supportive and they've talked about it on their channel. ISS has a veggie experiment and recently had their first veggie dining experience (for any space buffs out there). :-)

Sharon Michael | 674 comments Just finished Waiting for Shadow, a free download, and the prequel for a series. A thriller, not much mystery and definitely an introduction to the series. I will almost always try a book with a dog on the cover and am often disappointed, but definitely not in this case. I've already downloaded the first book in the series.

This seems to have all of the elements that will hook me into the series, dogs, in this case tracking/security dogs, a strong female lead character who is also a military vet and an amputee.

This author is starting to be one of the 'new to me" authors I look for.

Sean Peters | 155 comments Elimination A Dev Conrad mystery (A Dev Conrad Political Thriller) by Ed Gorman

Elimination (A Dev Conrad Political Thriller)

Firstly thank you to Net Galley, the publishers and authors for a honest review on this book.

Political consultant Dev Conrad is doing his best to help secure a re-election victory for congresswoman Jessica Bradshaw, who’s fighting a fierce battle with her far-right opponent, Michael Dorsey.

But the campaign is thrown into chaos when an assassination attempt is made on Jessica’s life. She survives, and finds herself leading the race, but when the shotgun used in the shooting is found in the trunk of one of Jessica's staffers, the ‘assassination attempt’ suddenly looks staged to win votes. With Jessica’s campaign in ruins, Dev investigates. Who wants Jessica dead, and is the reason solely political? Someone is determined Dev won’t find answers . . .

Dev Conrad's the kind of consultant you want running your campaign especially if the race is so hot people try to kill your candidate. He's an ex-Army investigator and a second-generation political op and, unfortunately, only a fictional character. But his creator, novelist Ed Gorman, himself a former political speechwriter and TV producer.

Readers of all political stripes will have as much fun following the maneuverings of Bradshaw’s and Dorsey’s respective campaigns as trying to figure out whodunit., but I hate politics!

Why only three stars from me, well, the story is good, but to me the book is heavy going, a little to "Talky" and not enough action, a little slow and heavy going, until 70% to 75% into the book, this part saved the book, the action starts, you know quite early who the villain is, and it becomes interesting how is he going to taken down.

But to me to give more stars a story has to grip you from the beginning, with twists, powerful plot, action and tension, this has none.

Sometimes I feel guilty reviewing a book for a publisher, but that is what we are asked to do give an honest review.

So only three stars for me, although I know I am outnumbered by lots of five stars ratings, not for me, sorry.

That totally sucks, but it happens often. I was reading a bio of a pimp turned writer and the author gave away all the plots of the guy's novels that I'd bought. I was so mad. Aargh.

I guess there is an upside to having a bad long-term memory. I read Odd Thomas but have no recollection to how it tied in with The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Please don't tell me now.

message 1349: by Ellen (new)

Ellen Kirschman Just finished THE MURDERER'S DAUGHTER, a stand-alone by famed mystery writer, Jonathan Kellerman. I'm a psychologist and mystery writer. I was drawn to the book by the premise; a deeply damaged, yet dedicated trauma psychologist with a secret life is pursued by a psychopathic killer from her past. There are plenty of reasons to feel compassion for Dr. Grace Blades' suffering, but I never did. She and most of the other characters in the book felt flat, like cardboard cut-outs of trauma victims. Kellerman's writing was nearly all "tell" and very little "show." Too much description, too little character development. I was surprised and disappointed.
