I enjoyed Among Others; I thought it was really interesting. I liked the magic system a fair bit. I keep meaning to try more of her other books, but..there are so many other books.

I loved Promise of Blood! I can't wait for the last book in the series to come out. You will have to let me know what you think.

Among Others was such a pleasant surprise when I read it 2 years ago (that still doesn't sound right yet - My read date was the 2nd week of January 2013).

What I loved, along with the story was all of the other authors introduced by the book; specifically Roger Zelazny and The Great Book of Amber, which I now own thanks to Morwenna / Jo Walton.

HomeInMyShoes I started the last book (so far) of YouSpace which will drop my open series down a point and maybe open up starting a new series at some point.

I still need to read Old Man's War. I got it in the Humble Bundle a couple years ago and have not got around to reading it.

message 154: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I just finished Crown Duel last night. I have the omnibus or complete version. (It's kind of confusing. Apparently, it was written as one book, but the publishers broke it into two books - Crown Duel and Court Duel. This version is the "reunited" edition, so I'm not really sure whether to call it an Omnibus or not. It's sort of like LotR.

But at least LotR has different names for the different parts, so you could say "I read Fellowship" meaning you read part one or "LotR" meaning the whole thing, but with this Crown Duel goes for both part 1 and the whole thing.)

Oh - and the omnibus/complete edition still separates part one and part two...

Anyway -

I'm glad I have the edition I do because Part One wasn't great, and it's mostly a 2-star and rather boring until the end, and I almost bailed at one point... but I liked Part Two much better, and am rather glad I pushed through.

But now I can't decide whether I should rate it as an Omnibus (in which I would sort of give an aggregate of parts 1 and 2, so give it a 3-3.5 stars), or as a single book (in which I might bump it up to 3.5-4).

***

I'm babbling 'cause I don't want to work.

***

This morning I started Mechanique: A Tale of the Circus Tresaulti. It's... interesting, so far. It's kind of weird, but weird was what I was expecting/wanting... but it's kind of written in a way that would normally irritate me (i.e. it's like a person telling a story, but not keeping linearly very well (so like how I tell stories), so you know the fate of someone right after you meet them sort of thing...

And I usually dislike this sort of "foreshadowing", but, in this case, I'm not minding that much.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I'm reading one of next month's group read books - my nomination for horror, Snowblind. I'm really enjoying it so far. It's creepy, and more so because it's freaking winter here and snow is a definite at some point. O_O

I'm liking the characters and the style and whatnot, so I'm looking forward to discussing this one next month. :D

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 5312 comments I really haven't read much of anything!!

:-(

I've been working out a lot - that's about it. I need to read something.

message 157: by Sinistmer (new)

Sinistmer | 212 comments I have been indulging in childhood nostalgia and reading the revised Sailor Moon manga; I also just started The Young Elites.

:( Maybe treat yourself to something you've wanted to read for a long time!?! Or maybe be inspired by Make #timetoread on National Readathon Day! which, I believe, is actually international. :)

I understand what you mean! I had to correct a bunch of assignments for our exam board meetings last week. They left me with no time for reading but I intend to catch up a little this weekend.

message 160: by Christine (new)

Christine (inhalesbookslikepopcorn) I started The Dragon Keeper and I enjoy it so far.

Darrell (darrellr) | 1 comments Anything I can get my hands on count? Heh, well right now still diving in urban fantasy. My current reading is Unholy Ghosts by Stacia Kane. I have to admit it isn't really pulling me in right now but it isn't pushing me away either. It's more of a middling book at this point. Hopefully it picks up soon or I'll probably move to a different series after this.

message 162: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments I'm glad I was able to read the 3 (actually 5 if you separate the omnibus) that I have, for I seem to have hit a hiccup as far as time and attention.
I haven't settled into either Hitchhiker's Guide or Dealing with Dragons, and I'm sort of kind of leaning towards Ancillary Justice, although few (my husband included) felt all that impressed.

Øystein | 55 comments I've read the last two books in the All Souls trilogy (Shadow of Night, The Book of Life). Not really great books, but once I start a series, I have to know how it ends...

At the moment I am reading The Dragon's Path and finding it interesting. So far it seems like two of the main characters are people that would be seen as antagonists in most books, and that's sort of cool.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I grabbed a free paperback copy of The Magician King from my library, so it's up for grabs or anyone who wants it.

First come, first serve.

Nyssa | 2023 comments Well, I seem to still be in the mood for manga, so I finished both Kitchen Princess, Vol. 01 & Kitchen Princess, Vol, 02 today.
I'm currently downloading the omnibus versions of the rest of the series which I originally bought for my daughter.

I also have to admit to myself that the my reading list aversion has kicked in, even though I'm the one who created the damn list. You would think that a person would be much more willing to follow their own list. *sigh*

With that being said, I am hoping, at the very least, to start The Iron King sooner than later.

Would reverse psychology work by making an aversion list of books instead? :P

Nah, Im too stubborn for an aversion list. I'd wonder why I chose not to read the books! :)

message 169: by Paolo (new)

Paolo (ppiazzesi) | 166 comments Hey all! After not really reading for a couple months I'm back with a break from SF/F, reading East of Eden. It's really good so far.

I'm also excited to see that Hyperion is next month's Sci Fi read, since it was one of my favorite books that I read last year.

message 170: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) I like Steinbeck, and I need to read that one soon. :)
