Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I'm closing the movie section and moving any relevant threads from it to the Off Topic Chat section.

What movie(s) have you just watched?

message 2: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie We just watched, Saving Mr. Banks. I thought Tom Hanks did a great job as Walt Disney :) my favorite part of the movie (view spoiler)
Has anyone else seen the movie?

message 3: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I've not seen it Stephanie, although I've seen the trailer for it.

I watched The Help for the first time a few nights ago and cried my eyes out for quite a significant portion of it. I loved the book when I read it last year and they did do a very good job with the film too. There were a few things left out but nothing major. My partner really liked it too

message 4: by Stephanie (last edited Jan 24, 2015 10:39AM) (new)

Stephanie That is good to know, about the Help, Sarah! I really want to read the book and see the movie. Do you watching or reading The Help first is best?

message 5: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I liked doing it the way I did. Generally, I read a book before watching the movie but I have done it the other way around before too. Quite often if I read it first, I find myself getting bored with the film as I know what is going to happen or frustrated that they've hanged something or missed something out. I didn't get that with The Help though.

message 6: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Oh good :) I get the same way when I read the book first. I love Harry Potter but found myself mad at the 4th movie because they left so much out at the beginning of the book..I guess they had to though or the movie would have been hours and hours and hours (which would have been completely fine with me).

I saw the movie some time ago. Apparently, the movie portrayed Walt Disney as very cooperative, when in reality, he wasn't quite as sweet. But then, it was a Disney movie so who would expect otherwise?

message 8: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Awe, that's a bummer to hear that he wasn't quite as sweet as portrayed in the movie :-(

message 9: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie In regards to cooperation..

message 10: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I wish I could remember where I read that so I could point you to it.

message 11: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments In one thread a week or so ago some people were talking about the film Lucy. I watched it last night. I thought it started off really well and I was quite excited about finding a great film but then it all went a bit weird towards the end. Overall I liked it though - it did keep me entertained for an hour and a half!

message 12: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie :-) awesome Sarah! I've been wanting to see that movie :-) good to know that it keeps one entertained!

Yes. I must agree. Add to that, that the starting point of the plot is scientifically completely wrong.

message 14: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I just watched The Book Thief and loved it! It was sad but the friendships Leesil (not sure of the spelling) had with Rudy, Max and even her new parents was very sweet. I am looking forward to reading the book next!

message 15: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I loved the book. The movie was good, too. I thought it did the book justice.

message 16: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Elizabeth | 95 comments Stephanie, I really liked the movie Saving Mr. Banks. I also just finished The Book Thief the book and then watched the movie. You will appreciate the book more because the movie left so much out- there is no way to squeeze it all into such a short time. :) I had a hard time with the writing style but adored the story

message 17: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I'm so excited to read the book! Have to wait till I get it from the library and then after the toppler :-)

I really enjoyed the movie, but there is so much more depth to the book.

Lynda | 836 comments Last night I watched Tusk in anticipation of going to see Kevin Smith next Saturday in Seattle. It is a great, wholey original film. If you like dark humor, and comedic horror movies, I highly recommend it! #walrusyes

Stephanie I just watched Heaven is for Real. What a sweet story. Has anyone read the book?

message 24: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie I second Lisa's question:)

message 25: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments It was okay, nothing new or spectacular. My favorite part were the mice. Too cute. :D

They looked very cute in the trailers I have seen for it too :) I'm not sure if I will go and see it. I might just wait for the DVD.

message 27: by Camilla (new)

Camilla | 2097 comments I'm going to the movies this evening to see Still Alice. I really liked the book and I'm looking forward to the film. Will let you know how it was.

message 28: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Barstad (maidenoflight) The last movie I watched was The Wolverine.

message 29: by Diane-OP (new)

Diane-OP My last movie was McFarland USA - pretty good story based on true events.

Camilla | 2097 comments About Still Alice: just okay, liked the book much better.

message 31: by Pragya (new)

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 4026 comments Lisa, waiting for the DVD is a good idea.

Oh, I was looking forward to Still Alice. :(

Has Paper Towns been released for anyone yet?

ceeeeg | 14 comments i watched 'Getting Clear,' last night, the HBO documentary about Scientology...to avoid possibly offending others here i will leave my commentary to this:...whew!

message 33: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19202 comments Oh is that based on the book? Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief? I'll have to keep an eye out for it (not that we get HBO docos over here very often).

message 34: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments Yes, it is based on the book. I hadn't realized it was out already though.

ceeeeg, could you elaborate more?? Like was it a good documentary? Where they as impartial as possible or at least backing up their claims with real info?? And did they make it over sensational?

I really liked the book and it's going to be a bit before I watch it due to not getting any HBO.

message 35: by ceeeeg (last edited Mar 30, 2015 04:48PM) (new)

ceeeeg | 14 comments oh it was indeed good...but when does HBO get the documentary film wrong?...never in my experience...

were they fair and impartial?...its a hard question to answer...i think it should rightfully be called an expose...i was unaware there was a book, but i am assuming, from the title, it was not favorable to the Scientology 'canon' or its practices...this documentary is not either...

the bulk of it is made up of high ranking members of the 'church' who have decamped and come out to speak up about the...

if a 1/4 of what they had to say is true?...it's horrifying and dangerous...i think the film is important to debunk and perhaps prevent others from falling into it in the future

also a lot of footage from inside the meetings they hold and of interviews previously given by T. Cruise and John T....they say they did repeatedly request fresh interviews, which they did not respond to...

so...i think they did an in depth investigation of the extant facts, interviewed key sources...as to whether they are reliable ones, i think one has to decide for themselves...

message 36: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1786 comments The book is not favourable to the 'church' either. I did think the author did a fine job of trying to stick to the facts he could find and was very clear when all he had was hearsay.

It sounds like the documentary did the same thing.

Scientology has always been a pretty curious religion and, like you say, even if only a little bit of it is true, it's still pretty disturbing.

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments I finally got to watch The Giver over the weekend. Even though it was very different from the book, it was really good. I sort of like the added drama and mini-romance Hollywood added.

message 38: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Apr 02, 2015 07:34AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments The Dovekeepers is a mini-tv series which started last night. I loved the book. Turned the channel fairly quickly into the movie.

ETA - I quit watching it because it was annoying me. I don't think that the way I worded it above made it clear that I quit watching it by "turning the channel".

message 39: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I watched the first episode of Outlander last night which has finally been made available to watch here in the UK. I loved it! If the rest of the series is as good as then I reckon it could become one of my favourite series. It may also prompt me to finally continue reading the rest of the books :) I loved the first one but have been doing a stalling job on the rest.

message 40: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59847 comments I must get re-reading Outlander. I have the first series saved on my DVR and I noticed it was recording an episode the other night. I want to read the book before watching the TV series.

I also have the second season of A Game of Thrones sitting on my table, but I want to read A Clash of Kings first.

message 41: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I want to re-read Outlander again too. I was going to try and do it before I started watching the tv show but I never got around to it. I will definitely re-read it before continuing with the rest of the books though.

message 42: by Lisa (last edited May 02, 2015 07:45AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I watched the film adaptation of Suite Francaise on Thursday. The reviews I had seen for it were average at best but I really enjoyed it and will definitely watch it again when it gets released on DVD. It was beautifully shot, the acting was good and the central romance between the two main characters was believable. It was quite sad at the end too. It was one of those films that deserved better reviews IMO. I liked it so much that I went and ordered the book today :)

message 43: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments I love the Game of Thrones series in HBO, but I have read all the books and so am in the current season. The series is coming close to bypassing the author though. I recently read an interview that George Martin did talking about the new book he is still working on. He talked about giving one of the characters a major twist in the story, but said that the show would not be able to incorporate it because of a different direction that they have gone with the character. So I sense there may be some major frustration in my future.

Perhaps the people who didn't like the movie had already read the book. No matter how great a film, I've never seen a movie that's completely captured excellent prose. And Suite Francaise is really a gem of a book. Keep in mind it's been at least three years since I've read it, but I still remember her use of language. The way the author used sentence length to highlight details- long sentence with tons of commas and semicolons followed by a three or four word sentence.

My husband and I just finished up with season one of Outlander. We both liked it a lot, and will continue watching in season two.

I want to check out Wayward Pines when it starts soon.

message 48: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie My husband really wants to watch Wayward Pines! Me, it looks too scary for me, lol, but I will check it out too :) I will just make sure to hide my eyes during scary scenes :)

message 49: by KimeyDiann (new)

KimeyDiann | 2174 comments When is Wayward Pines going to start airing? I love love loved the books so I'm excited about the tv series! I rarely watch tv anymore though, so I'm trying to remember to check for when it starts so I can set my DVR to automatically record it.

message 50: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie May 14th is what it said here in Virginia :)
Funny you asked, KineyDiann, because I just saw the commercial for it :)
