Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I didn't receive any mail this week (not even fliers) until 4:30 this afternoon. There was several days worth of mail, including a parcel notification card that said they tried to deliver it two days ago (not).

I zipped over to the post office and picked up my package:

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows
A Dance with Dragons

Crack for book lovers.

Sarah | 18550 comments Nice delivery Janice! It's well worth the wait! Are you going to space them out or are you planning to devour them? I read them all back to back (except the last one which I had to wait a bit for it to be published). I'm really glad you gave the first one another chance and that you enjoyed it so much you bought the rest of them!

message 53: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't know if she always was that way or if because I tend to buy all published books in a series fairly quickly, buty wife will not read anything else once she starts a series. Goes back to back. Drives me crazy I tell her to read this book. She says can't still have 7 more to finish series. She is on wheel of time currently. I think I created a monster. I did read ASoIaF back to back basically. I snuck a couple books here and there and had to quit book 5 halfway for a while and come back to it. I read the first 3 all in span of a month though.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Nice haul Janice!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments At least your Wife knows the series is finished Travis. Even if the end is somewhere less than 13 books away.

I'm glad I gave it a second chance too. I used to read series back to back. But I would buy the whole series and then read them all. Now, I tend to buy differently. Personally, I think it's the best thing to do so that you keep the story fresh in your mind, especially where the story basically continues from one to the next. Series, like Pendergast, where the main character is primarily the common denominator, doesn't matter so much.

I'm itching to read A Clash of Kings, but I've started this other chunkster and then there's the Toppler coming up. I lovingly caress the books every time I pass by them.

message 57: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments That is what I like about back to back too. So easy to keep tracknof story line. But apparently most o the time I need a little more variety. Back to back for me is usually a short book im between to mix it uo

message 58: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I think that's what's scaring me off about reading A Song of Ice and Fire back to back - they're all monsters. It's going to be a consider commitment of time to read them back to back.

message 59: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I prefer back to back too; but when there is a Serie which is "stretched" by the autor (und/or publisher) (and unfortunately most of the today's current are) I can't stand the reading and MUST interrupt with something to get some 'air' in between

message 61: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I picked up an audiobook in Audible's latest sale. Best thing is I was able to apply a coupon to it so go it for free - Hard Magic.

message 62: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Looks like some fun, fascinating reads ahead for you, Mariab. I love the title of the last one but am more drawn to pick up the first one. Brendon gave it four stars.

message 64: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I also bought Station Eleven as it was reduced in price but also quite a few of my GR friends have rated it 5 stars.

Paakhi Srivastava (pankh) | 199 comments I just ordered How to Make an American Quilt by Whitney Otto :) Had been wishing to buy this since forever..finally got it!! Has anyone read it?

message 69: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I do not think so, Lisa, but it is on my list now. It does look familiar though.... Oh, it was a movie. Did you see it?

message 70: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments I just went a little crazy on Audible's best sellers sale. I got:

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot Clockwork Angel (The Infernal Devices, #1) by Cassandra Clare First Grave on the Right (Charley Davidson, #1) by Darynda Jones The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay The Firebird (Slains, #2) by Susanna Kearsley The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

I've got some listening to do!

message 71: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Nice, Kristie. I have Harold Fry and Burnadette too. Some great listening ahead of you!

message 72: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Great books Kristie. Almost all of them I have either read or on my tbr.

message 73: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments Thanks I'm really excited about my splurge. :) I think there's some good additions to my little library.

message 74: by Anna (new)

Anna Kļaviņa (annamatsuyama) | 1365 comments Yesterday I finished the first book in the Lord Peter Wimsey series and today I bought 2nd and 3rd book

Clouds of Witness, Unnatural Death

message 75: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I used a couple of Audible credits and got The Book of the Dead so that I can get going on my Pendergast series, and All the Light We Cannot See for our real life book club.

message 76: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Feb 02, 2015 08:17AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments I succumbed! Audible and their series starting sale.. *grumble*

I picked up two totalling under $7.00 thanks to a $3.00 coupon. I got Deadly Night. I've been wanting to read one of her books for awhile. And I got Wallbanger. It purports to be funny, among other things. We shall see.

message 77: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments Ah, yes, Janice. I'm looking at that sale now. I'm thinking about Daughter of Smoke & Bone and Wallbanger.

message 78: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I read Wllabanger Janice. I was kind of fun, but not extraordinarie

message 79: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments Mariab wrote: "I read Wllabanger Janice. I was kind of fun, but not extraordinarie"

I hope it tickles my funny bone. I'm in need of something light and silly.

It seems like there are few really funny books these days. Maybe it's the same reason that horror stories don't scare me anymore.

Add one more book to my new purchases. Amazon.ca has monthly kindle deals, and I picked up Inamorata. It's available as a whispersync deal, but I think I'll hold off on getting the audiobook for now.

message 81: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Nice haul Travis! Thought you'd been keeping quiet ;-) I'm intrigued about what you'll think to some of those titles.

message 82: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Yeah well I posted or started posting some a couple weeks ago and fell asleep. Enough time passed when I got on goodreads again and theywere still hanging out unposted, they wpuldn't let me post. I said to heck with it and hadn't found the ambition to get back to it.

message 83: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments I have caught up with Christmas and beyond. So I have now on my shelf:
The Remains of the Day
Boy, Snow, Bird
The Mandarin Code
On Chesil Beach

We both got:
Crap Taxidermy
Complete Asian Cookbook

Lexx got:
Ancillary Justice
Cryptonomicon
The Slow Regard of Silent Things

Post job interview shopping therapy the other day:
Flight Behavior
Cat's Eye
The Marmalade Files

And then at Costco the other day I saw a box set for cheap and grabbed:
The Maze Runner
The Scorch Trials
The Death Cure

message 84: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I had to look up crap taxidermy. Sounds like things I'd love to have done but won't because going to the taxidermist is expensive. And the wife says I can only put one more thing on the wall unless I build myself a man cave. Note: all wall mounts have been used as food and not mearly just trophy kills. Being a wall hanger is jist an added bonus

message 85: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Not thought of being an amateur taxidermist Travis?

message 86: by Peggy (last edited Feb 03, 2015 04:03AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've googled images of 'taxidermy gone wrong' before, but I never knew there was a whole website devoted to it, and even a book!

message 87: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Nope the taxidermy business doesn't appeal to me really. Tanning the hide and all that is kind of on the gross side. Well there was a dirty jobs where he went to a place that dealt in hides. It was gross.

message 88: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments What a list Travis! A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo were really good reads.

message 89: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11316 comments Curious to know what you think of Flight Behavior, Rusalka. I read it last year and couldn't enjoy it really. Bonus: The main character has an unusual name, in case this is the theme voted for the March reading book. ;) (I know this was already read for the group a few months ago, though)

message 90: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 60103 comments Busy shoppers in our group!

message 91: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I got The Leaving of Things. Lilisa gave it a great review so I'm looking forward to it :)

message 92: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments Not sure you really want to have one of the crap taxidermy in your house though Travis. I really enjoy the twitter feed so it was a great spot from a friend. Just makes me laugh.

When Dad passed away his mates at work packed up his office for me and brought the boxes over. I went through them and pulled out this thing, screamed and threw it to the otherside of the room. Crazy old bastard had a taxidermied Cane Toad. It did have a walking stick and a bottle of Bundy Rum as well but scared the crap out of me. Little brother now has it guarding his booze.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments Lexx thought it was the funniest thing ever. Who has a stuffed toad? Seriously?!

message 96: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19222 comments Not a new purchase yet, (soon, my pretties, soon!) but have Princess Bride fans seen this? As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride

Sarah | 18550 comments Sandra wrote: "lol! Would love to see your face, Rusalka!"

Me too!

message 98: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19338 comments Rusalka - That was one of the nominees for the GR choice awards this past year. I want to read it.

message 99: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yikes Rusalka, that's an unpleasant surprise. I think I would have had the exact same response!

message 100: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Yes, Rusalka, about Carry's book. We have a signed copy. Amy went to see him speak. I have to wait for her to read it.
