SOLVED. Middle Grade Novel where girl decides to use scientific method to get a boyfriend. [s]

I read this book around 2014 and the cover was purple. The book was a middle grade novel where the main character wants a boyfriend (I can't remember if she had a specific crush in mind or not). After having to come up with a science project for class, she decides to apply the scientific method to her struggles. She starts a journal labeled "Soul Observations" (I remember this because later she makes a decoy called "Soil Observations" to get the school bully off her back) and writes down her observations of boys. She even sneaks into the boy's bathroom multiple times in order to get these observations. I'm pretty sure she did get a boyfriend, who was the guy she initially disliked.
