SOLVED. Adult novel about a writer who writes a short story about a Berlin (?) zoo in wartime (?) and works on it throughout the novel. [s]

I just thought of this detail (the short story about the Berlin zoo) and tried google, but couldn't find anything. I suppose the novel is about writing, because the writer works on his 'zoo story' throughout the metastory, but I cannot recall other details. I think he's also working on an actual novel.
I read it a couple of years ago, say around 2016.
