YA - Sci-fi: in a world where humans disappeared one day, a cat tries to free other cats trapped at home

I read this book around 2000/2005. I remember that the Italian book cover was translucent and it has some cats walking in the night.

What I can remember is that one day all humans disappeared from the world living the animals behind, a cat, which I think was the main character tries to free the other ones that were stuck in their homes.

I think it was in the present time, or a very near future. Unfortunately I can't remember where it was exactly set.
