Okay, so I'm dying of curiosity. Who has already read this hefty monster and who's going to dedicate the next month to reading it?

message 3: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (ucdlindsey) This has been sitting on my shelf at home for 2 years (probably because of the length). I will take a shot at least to start it in January, can't promise I'll finish it in Jan. ;)

I'd like to hear some comparisons between the book and the show from those who have read and watched both. Use the spoiler html if necessary.

Samantha | 25 comments No problem, Kiersten. I'm interested in knowing how I will feel about the book since I am a huge fan of the show.

message 8: by Chele (new)

Chele | 11 comments I have already read A Game of Thrones and I liked it enough to read the rest. I am now in the middle of the fifth book in this series A Dance with Dragons. They are all so long instead of reading them I have listened to audio books, that way I can fit them in while cleaning or driving. I actually wish I hadn't started the series yet because he hasn't written the last two books. These are not stand alone books and one flows right into the next as if it is all one book. I may have to wait years to find out what happens considering there were six years between the release dates of his last two books.

message 9: by Susan (new)

Susan | 1 comments Michele, I had read comments that they were harder to follow in audio than reading. I guess you are not finding that to be true??

In the beginning I had some trouble keeping the characters straight but now I know most of them really well so that's not an issue any more. And if I do forget one of them whats happening in the story reminds me pretty quickly who it is. I didn't think I would actually like this series I just started it because one of my challenges was to read a book by a male author and now I am hooked.

Angela Porter | 18 comments I have read this book before but am wanting to reread the series up to the latest one. There was such a huge space of time between book 4 and book 5 that I forgot some of what happened. I am so happy that it is one of the books of the month cause I needed a push to read it again.

The first book in the series and the first season of the show are pretty damn close in comparison. Obviously there is a lot more in the book because it's so long but I enjoyed what they portrayed in the show. This is one of my favorite fantasy series of all time. I'm excited to see what people who are reading it for the first time think. :)

I've already read the whole series and I'm obsessed! Be warned, if you don't mind waiting a while for another book to be written as GRRM is renowned for taking a long time to finish his books. I would advise that it's definitely worth it!

Betsy (betz00) | 5 comments Requested from the library will start soon :) looking forward finally reading the book everyone has been bugging me about. Hoping to be able to make some comparisons since I've seen a few random episodes from the show.

Madison Kinsella | 6 comments Hi there, read all of the books so far available so now stuck! Also watching the tv series and it's interesting to see the similarities/ differences. There are loads I've forgotten, but this website breaks down each episode of each series and and compares everything:

I finished the bokos months ago bit im going to reread it. I loved Tyrion though and have to admitt rhe debates about the books are great. I must admitt that my house occasionally my house ends up in a free for all debate over game of thrones and the role of the characters and whose the better mother Cat or Cersei and even just who will win the gameof thrones.

message 20: by Sean (new)

Sean | 3 comments i am reading the second book now. i am a bit disappointed with the series to be honest. not sure i like how many deaths there are

message 21: by Whitney (new)

Whitney (whitneychakara) | 80 comments I didn't like the second book at all but I needed to get to the third. I read and listen to each book.

message 22: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (ucdlindsey) I've officially started reading this one, not too far yet. Although there are lots and lots of characters, and the story is being told through many different viewpoints, I'm finding the appendix with the list of the houses and their members helpful, and it's keeping my attention.

message 23: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (ucdlindsey) It's no longer January but I just finished this one. Glad this group finally gave me the motivation to pull it off the shelf and read it, I loved it. Not as much paranormal as I might expect in a fantasy book, but all the characters are fascinating. As long as it was, I never lost interest. I really want to read the next one, but it will have to wait a while. At least now I can allow myself to watch season 1 of the tv show and not feel like I'm spoiling the book for myself. ;)
