Year I read: around 2007
Setting: from what I remember, a suburban neighborhood; possibly in New England (I could be totally making that up though)
Specific plot details: I’m sorry I don’t have a ton of memories, but this is what I do remember:
- The main character was a girl, possibly middle school age
- I remember specifically that at one point in the book, the main character recounted a time when her sister had put something red in the laundry with the whites, “turning everything a shade of greyish pink” (not necessarily a direct quote but very close).
- The girl meets a boy.
- At some point either he hides under her bed or she hides under his, hiding from a parent after one of the characters snuck in at night.
- There is a local legend of a rat man. Possibly mouse man. Possibly even a raccoon?
- The girl doesn’t believe that the rat man really exists.
- The girl and boy do find the rat man. He is not actually half man, half rat like the legend says. He is just a messy, unkempt person. He’s also very nice.
- I think the girls sister may have also tagged along.
- I think the girl has a single mother.
- I can’t remember if the boy and girl kissed, or if I just really wanted them to. 😂
I’m sorry. I know that’s not a cohesive plot, but that’s all I can remember.
Possible title hints: The title was definitely a long one, and I think it may have been a question. Something like “Have you seen the rat man?” or “Are you afraid of rats?” Obviously those aren’t the title, but I think it might be something similar.
Also, I’m pretty sure the author was a woman.
Thank you so much! I’ve been thinking about this book for years! It was truly bonkers but also I was really into the chemistry between the boy and the girl in a very pubescent time in my life. 😂 Thanks again!!!
