Ugh! So interesting how nice the Japanese people were to them in the boat but then it was so horrible again for them once they got transferred to the camp. The treatment was so horrendous it's so hard to imagine living like that. Hearing about how they would have to (view spoiler)[ eat things infested with maggots & having a leg cut off while watching about did me in!! (hide spoiler)]

I honestly don't understand how someone can live through something like this and survive it. You know??

I'm at the part where all the officers were moved to the new camp - of shacks. And the POW officers are (view spoiler)[ finally deciding they need to kill the bird... I think that's a grand idea! The bird is a miserable bastard anyway and I think he'll be glad to not have to endure another day of his miserable existence as well! However, it seems their "plan" is sort if more complex than anything I was thinking.. I just thought they each needed a big stick and some steel toe boots... But what do I know?? (hide spoiler)]

Ya, I (view spoiler)[ wanted justice for Louis and the bird dead. But I was glad Louis was able to find peace and get his life back. I thought the book would end when he was rescued so was glad when it went on to talk about how it was for them afterwards. So heartbreaking! I've heard of PTSD, of course, but I guess I never really thought about how it would be to live with it. Or, like his wife, live around it... I'm impressed as hell their marriage survived that. But really happy and amazed he was able to get thru it and have a good and long life in the end.
