Set in 1920's-1930, fiction but based on true story events. I read this book about 7 years ago, but its likely to have been around longer as it is apart of a series of books.
The story follows 2 boys, one mixed with white and native American, the other kid (possibly called Michael). Michael is the son of a slave. And the mixed kid who often 'passes' for white is the son of the Slave Masters mistress. They dislike eachother but end up escaping by hopping on a train and hiding either under the seats when it is checked for missing persons, or under some kind ladies dresses. (I don't rememeber which.) Eventually they grow up and fall in love with the same girl. They then have a desire and work towards owning a piece of land which becomes disputed. (100s of acres). The family of the mixed kid still maintain the rights to the land till present day.
