Tea | 464 comments I wonder if there background for a chick-lit story in us. 'Cause last evening, I finally saw that movie, Something New — which some of you have mentioned.

I didn't love it (too many expressions I'd never before heard were depicted as ubiquitous among Black communities; I was over that whole "the Black family/friends don't accept the White partner" thing ages ago) but still enjoyed it (the supermarket scene needs to be part of middle school education) — and I kept thinking how much the better the movie would have been if the MC's friends had been us. (Of course, had she been friends with us, there would have had to be some other point of tension in the plot.)

Would you ladies hate it if I used a made up discussion group in a fictional book-based social media — one that was based on us — as background in a future project?

I wouldn't lift any personalities wholesale, but the discussions here have done more to help me embrace writing again (after almost two years without writing anything I truly believed in) than my writing groups. I'd really like to give that sort of support to a character (no matter what her profession ends up being).

What do you think? All members please feel free to chime in.

The FountainPenDiva, Old school geek chick and lover of teddy bears (thefountainpendiva) | 1216 comments I'm in. As long as my character can remain the weird metal loving geek chick, lol.

Paganalexandria | 4065 comments Yeah you can use me, just make me funnier, and don't include my constant grammatical errors. LOL

That's a great idea Tea.

Kim (kimgm) | 1032 comments I enjoyed Something New. What I thought was interesting was how Kenya's father was the only person in her family who seemed to understand what Kenya needed. He told her to go after the love she needed and not what was expected of her.

What I wished we could have seen in the movie was how it went when Kenya met Brian's family and friends (which we never saw, only a glimpse at the end when Brian's father is present).

Anyway, Tea, I think your idea sounds awesome. :) I look forward to reading it. :)

Gigi (g-altagracia) | 229 comments Haven't seen SN yet, but liking this idea, Tea.
Wouldn't mind at all to be used like that. If you have room for a island born metal chick from across the ocean ;-)

Echo (mrsbookmark) | 307 comments I would definitely read the book:)
I know I don't contribute much insightful to the discussions...I enjoy reading them but most people say the things I already think way better than I can.
