The book I am looking for starts with there being only one Historian(i believe that is the title of her position) the historian is able to go into the past and observe events that took place. a warlord captures her and force her to step into the future to ensure his victory.

latter she gathers traveling companions together. as the story needs them they become historians also, but each with a different ability in the past. one can move objects, one can here voices from the past while still in the present. and I think one can wisper to those in the past, influencing there decisions.

there are a lot of different races, like dwarfs and such.
