I would say the Selection series really could end after the third book. The new book coming out is a different setting as for time and plot (hope that was not any kind of spoiler).

Jenny | 6 comments I know I'm a bit behind schedule, but for a non-fiction book, would a recipe book count? Thanks!

Yes, a cooking book is non fiction :)

message 155: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments Yes, but you have to cook every recipe and send us samples. ;) LOL

Rebekah - I would, but I'm not sure that falafel travel well, maybe in a padded envelope they might make it?

Zaz wrote: "Yes, a cooking book is non fiction :)"

Thanks Zaz! I struggle to engage with lots of non fiction but I will devour cookery books with glee - its a relief to think I can incorporate that into the challenge!

Adriana Pereira (adrianacecilia) Thaaaaaank you so much Rebekah and Kirin!

So far, I have as possibilities Insomnia, The Informers and Mr. Vertigo. I'm going to add all those too!

message 160: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia (anastasiaharris) | 319 comments I was looking at my list and trying to fill in some of the blanks. One of the most difficult is a book written by an author with your initials. Is there a list or search engine that I can use to look this up?

I have tried typing into google, looked up lists here and other books sites, but am probably doing it wrong.

Thanks.

message 161: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments Anastasia, I google "authors with the initials ".

How about Alex Haley, Arthur Hailey, Abbie Hoffman, Anthony Horowitz, Aldous Huxley, or Angela Elwell Hunt?

Jennifer Van Beveren | 93 comments So I have a question about a play..does Phantom of the Opera count?

message 164: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer Van Beveren | 93 comments Also one of the websites visited for banned books also lists Challenged books. Can we use these as well?

message 165: by Rebekah (last edited Jul 14, 2015 12:01PM) (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments I would not count "The Phantom of the Opera" unless it is in a play format. It is a novel. I do believe that it's perfect for the following categories:

Read a Book That is Set in a Different Country
Read a Book That is More Than 100 Years Old
Read a Book That was Originally Written in a Different Language

That's a good question regarding whether or not the book is banned/challenged. Personally, I'd like to think of a banned/challenged book as a book that someone is currently trying to ban/has already banned -- lump them together. There are books that have (and still are) banned, and these books that may currently be challenged in other parts of the country/world to this day. We DO know that the Office for Intellectual Freedom HAS received reports of those books that are being challenged/banned. They have compiled the lists every year of those that are challenged, restricted, removed, or banned.

BOTTOM LINE: I'd definitely accept a challenged book as a banned book based on the fact that someone or some group is trying to get it banned.

message 169: by Jeanie (new)

Jeanie (lewisia) | 28 comments Sorry if this is a stupid question but does the book for week 37 (a book set in the future) mean the future when it was written (such as Orwell's 1984 which is no longer the future now) or the future for us(2015 onwards)?

And does the play in week 49 have to be in script format?

Any advice welcome. Thanks

message 170: by Jeanie (last edited Jul 18, 2015 01:07PM) (new)

Jeanie (lewisia) | 28 comments Just a quick comment about what a memoir is, as mentioned further up the thread.

As far as I know a memoir is autobiographical but it just concentrates on a period of the author's life or on specific events. An autobiography is more the whole life (or part of it if it's in several volumes) and tends to be more of a chronological account of events.

message 171: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
Jeanie, for week 37, everything set in a future is fine, so you can use a book like 1984 or a book happening after our present.

For week 49, for me, yes it's in script format.

message 172: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments Jeanie, I read "The Handmaid's Tale". It was written in 1985, but when you read it, it looks like parts of it take place in the future of 1990's or 2000's. The epilogue does take place in 2195, though. Read any book that says that it is set in the future ("1984" as an example). It doesn't matter if we've already passed that time.

Elizabeth I have to say I love how you put 44. A book you own but haven’t read (no folder yet)
”But I’ve read everything I own!” Oh come on… this is an easy one! This is your excuse to go by a new book. Have fun!
I already have a kindle TBR that's over 200 and some I don't need any more ideas about new books, but if you won't tell then I won't tell ,I'll just say they followed me home like a lost puppy.

I know, Elizabeth! It's so annoying! Luckily, I have quite a few YA books that I own and haven't read!

I know right , it like saying you won't eat any more chocolate but its right there in font of you calling out to you ,so what happens you have to have it, so ever time I go to my all time favorite kindle book website I see some books I want and I keep saying I got enough but the next thing I know is there on my bookshelf for me books are my chocolate addiction that's how I ended up with 225 kindle books on my kindle TBR

message 183: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 73 comments What's the deal with the Trilogy? Do you have to read all 3 books? And does it strictly have to be a trilogy - meaning 3 books - not 4 or more?

I am new to the Popsugar Challenge, and for the life of me, I can't figure out how to post my list. Where does it go?

Thank you!

message 184: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments In this case, it's a trilogy (3 books). I suppose you can do more. For the PopSugar Challenge to hit 52 weeks, the "trilogy" category was separated into 3 weeks (1 book for each week).

Post your list under the topic titled "2015 Plans". Check out the "Introduction" under the "2015 Plans" topic.

If you'd like to look at a sample, you can check out my list -- link is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

OR you can check out everyone else's plans under the "2015 Plans" topic.

I hope this helps. :) Have fun!!

message 185: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 73 comments Thank you, Rebekah. That helped a lot. I added my list to the very bottom of the "Introduction" topic. It's interesting to know what everyone is reading.

Tell me: any plans to do a "top 10" list for each of the 52 book categories at the end of the year (or sooner)? Guess it's a lot of work to compile the info. Just thought tht might be really fun - and helpful for next year.

Thank again for your very valued help :)

message 186: by Zaz, Mood Minion (new)

Zaz | 1387 comments Mod
Welcome Stacey!
I don't think we'll do a "top 10" for each week as members read different books for most of the weeks and have different tastes (so a book can be a 2 stars for one and a 5 stars for another). However, we'll do a topic where members can list their favorite books from the challenge.

message 187: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments Top 10 List? That's a good question. I never really thought about a Top 10 list for each category. You'd have to ask the moderator about that. I do know that if you go to each weekly category topic, you will see what everyone else has been reading. Some people have even written their reading suggestions for each category, too.

Stacey > That may be able to fit into next year somehow, especially if we do a "Book of a month". We haven't really nailed down what that would look like but it seems like a popular book from the challenge would be a good option to be a group read. So that would be more like the #1 book from each month. Feel free to visit the General Suggestions thread to look at suggestions for next year.

message 189: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 73 comments Maybe that could actually be a category. "Everyone read the most popular book from the 2015 Reading Challenge". For some, it would be a re-read - or freebie. From folks' lists I've browsed so far, this might be Divergent.

Throw it into the ring for the 8th mini-vote? Might be a silly idea...

message 190: by Rebekah (last edited Sep 01, 2015 10:48AM) (new)

Rebekah | 98 comments OR the future 2016 category could be: "Read a Book from the 2015 Top 10 List", and we hope that not everyone read all of the books from the list. LOL Maybe make it a Top 25 List (just to be sure). LOL

message 191: by Stacey (new)

Stacey D. | 73 comments Love it! I know I haven't read all of the top 10.

Elizabeth, there is a challenge every year, we are currently in the process of making our own for next year instead of sticking with the Popsugar Challenge that we are doing this year. you can find all the information here
