Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments So, it is Our Dear Leader's birthday tomorrow. I'm sure you all have some ideas you'd like to share on just how he should celebrate!

I think he should wear a party hat all day long. That way, when people ask about it, he can tell them it's his birthday, and they will give him cake! ;)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I think we should all make a roadtrip out to the Badlands together... and wait for something cathartic to happen.

Plus, I second the cake idea (chocolate trip ice cream to be left at home for this outing in honor of the birthday boy).

Félix (habitseven) I'm afraid my car would break down.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments He's turning 40, by the way...

message 5: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) He's in mid-life crisis. He's about to buy a Corvette

Nah, he just bought a brand-spanking new (and dependable) family car. It looks like a fun one, too. Plus, he's got the mix CDs thing down to an art (minus the casing), so we'd all be set with the excellent music. :)

message 7: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) He sure is quiet on this topic. Maybe the 40 part scares him. I was about to graduate college at 40.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments He does seem to be missing in action today. Maybe he's decorating for his party. Tiki lights, balloons, and streamers?

Or do you think he's going for the "Over the Hill" theme, all black, and a tombstone-shaped cake?

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments All kidding aside, if I got RA anything at all, it'd be something like this:

Happy birthday, friend! :) x∞
You don't look a day over 29 (except when you wear short sleeve button down shirts with a tie).

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

That is perfect Heidi!

message 18: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Heidi, where did you find all those cakes?

message 19: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Jim is just saying that because he's a Cubs fan. Misplaced loyalty I say.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Jim wrote: "That is perfect Heidi!"

:( But I couldn't find any Brewers cakes, so I thought it'd be the next best thing for him since he used to live there (even if he does refer to you as "you Cubs fans").

Would this one be better?

No, the Cubs one is perfect ;-).

This may be the only one better.

I'm not trying to goad him. >:/ I'm trying to be nice. Besides, now I think I like KD's better.

message 24: by Heidi (last edited Sep 22, 2009 03:54PM) (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments NM. Scratch all that junk I posted earlier (except I still like KD's).

:) I like this one best:

message 25: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) KD found da cake!

message 26: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) I do think our dear RA is avoiding the inevitable razzing he will get.

message 27: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I'm sure he's either working or busy doing birthday stuff with friends and family IRL.

tad, I spotted this again in your pics and thought this would be an appropriate place to post it (again), mostly because it's his favorite:

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments Hee! Yeah, that's a good one, Heidi. :D

message 29: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Oh look, RA is finally online.

message 30: by [deleted user] (new)

Was I goading Heidi? Ooops my bad. :-D

message 31: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Hello Jim, you've said nothing to me today. Have I tripped the trip wire? And, no, you weren't goading anyone.

message 32: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Ah, thanks people! This is awesome. Yes, I turn forty tomorrow.

Question...how do you feel about milestone birthdays, e.g. 18, 21, 30, 40, etc? How did you respond? What did you do on those days?

message 33: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) The same thing I did every other day. It wasn't until I was fifty that it started to matter. Now, I just don't care. The question is, what do you want to do?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I always feel like I should do something special for those big birthdays, but then I don't. I just go out to dinner with Chris and my Mom, and one of them makes me a cake.

Once, they didn't coordinate, and I got TWO cakes! :D

Anyhow, if I wanted a big birthday blowout, with lots of friends over for a party, I'd be the one who would have to plan it, and gee, I don't feel like doing a lot of work (and dishes) on my birthday.

message 35: by Stephen (new)

Stephen (stephenT) Have your friends take you to a fancy restaurant.

message 36: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I remembered Jackie made her own birthday cake once. I think I'm going to make my own tomorrow. I'm ok with that. I like making cakes. And yes, I'm still a real man. I think.

Since my birthday is on a Wednesday it's not a big deal. In fact, I'm teaching in the morning then I think I'm going to grade papers most of the afternoon. I might take Friday off of work, though, and do something...not sure what.

I'm also going to go away for a couple days in late October, when my wife's mom is in town, and I'm counting that as for my birthday.
On my 21st birthday I went to a poetry reading in Chicago.

I honestly don't remember what I did on my 18th and 30th.

Oh, my eighteenth I got really, really drunk after work. But I don't remember my 30th.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments What kind of cake are you going to make?

message 38: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments http://www.koshergourmetmart.com/cata...

Apparently it's kosher, too...I found the pic on a kosher site.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I would think most cakes would be kosher. You don't tend to mix milk and meat when you're making cake.

And here come the bacon jokes...

Hello Stephen - not sure what the trip wire means.

message 41: by RandomAnthony (last edited Sep 22, 2009 06:19PM) (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Is that what makes something kosher? Meat?

I should have known that.

Heh. I imagine Stephen keeps a little chart on his wall about who has interacted with him that particular day...:)

message 42: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I also want to say all the cakes people posted are really cool. Thanks, thanks, thanks.

Why were you perusing the kosher cooking website? Are you kosher-inclined?

And Happy Early Birthday! I've been putting off posting my wishes hoping I'd make it until midnight and I could actually wish you good vibes on your day of birth, but I don't know if I'll make it much longer.

Sounds like your past year has been a good one, full of healthy changes. Wasn't it about this time last year that you really got back into working out? Keep it up and you might just be a healthier 41 than 39! (I don't know what I'm saying at this point, my fingers are still moving and my brain has apparently checked out.)
Sum of post = happy birthday.

That's a sum, right?

*lights self on fire*

message 44: by Matt (new)

Matt | 819 comments Happy early birthday, Sir!

Supposedly one of the florists here in town has a guy who will come to your office in a gorilla suit and give you a birthday hug. That was going to be your present until I mentioned Wisconsin and the gorilla and me got into an argument about mileage and lodging. Stupid monkey...

Seriously, hope you have a great day tomorrow!

I have to keep up with who is still upright, and who has fallen down and can't get up. "That's why I wear one too." says, E. Everett Coop.

hehehhehe

message 47: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Heh...where's that goddamn monkey, Tad???

Sally, I started working out seriously Memorial Day of 2008 after a weekend long drunken binge. I had sort of worked out before then. But after Memorial Day I became somewhat psycho about it.

You know what I want to do today? I haven't sat in my favorite chair at the library in a couple months. I'm teaching this morning, then I'm going to do sit in my favorite chair. I don't need anything else.

Oh, that cake. I searched for it on google images and the pic came up on a kosher site.:)
