"Catfishing on CatNet" - First Impressions *No Spoilers*

Oh, cool!
Oh, cool!
I was despairing of finding a copy to be able to read this but it’s on sale on Kjndle today fo $2.99. Get it.
I would normally avoid YA because of my biases and assumptions about the genre. I read this book as my first participation in a group read on GR. I'm happy I did as it was a pleasant diversion. Naomi Kritzer peppers in some delightful foreshadowing to chew on as the plot unfolds.Personally I'd call this book speculative fiction in that it's very light on SF elements (IMO) and not fantasy at all. Nevertheless, categorization of things can be so challenging and ultimately futile, right?

Mike, this thread is for first impressions only, and no spoilers, even in tags, should be posted here. The spoiler thread will go up in just a week! :)The reason we ask that no spoiler tags are used in the official BOTM threads is that people who are on the (iOS) app can't see them at all.

Wow, nice work Anna. Thanks.
I totally hate when that happens and the saddest part is there is this other group that I frequent where they do not even care. They go spoilers blazing and recently made me feel very sad for one book that I was supposed to read. Totally love this group for what you just did. Awesome work.
I'm so excited to read this! I remember liking the original short story, and I'm curious to see how Kritzer developed the basic idea into a novel.
Thanks for your guidance and understanding as I learn the ropes. I removed the tagged spoiler from my post.
I'm a few chapters into this and am so far really enjoying it. Sometimes the teen angst in YA novels gets to me but I like the way the author is handling it and the early hint of something deeper is pulling me along. The book being set near where I grew up adds to the fun.
I'm enjoying it, despite the fact that I'm finding it not very original.I too grew up in a small town in Wisconsin.
Oops, started spoiling. Erased.
I’m starting tonight. Going into this one knowing nothing about it other than the title and that it’s a May read for this group. Looking forward to jumping in blind.
I really liked it. I didn't know it was going to be a series. I probably need to stop before I spoil something. I accidentally read this before May even started.
I'm glad that the mods and the voters picked this one. I never would have come across it on my own. 🐱💻
Chris wrote: "I'm glad that the mods and the voters picked this one. I never would have come across it on my own. 🐱💻"I totally agree, the title is so silly I thought it was a joke at first.
Those of you who know me (a little bit) - would this be something I'd enjoy reading (spoiler free of course)? (I'm one who blocked sources of cat pics on social media cause I hate being flooded by them)It is again one of those books that are quite expensive and I'm not sure if it is for me.
Anna wrote: "Gabi wrote: "I'm one who blocked sources of cat pics on social media"WHAT?! How dare you! :o"
Sorry, I know it is bordering on blasphemy ^^', but I really can't stand all those cat pics in my timelines. If sb would start posting spider pics, that of course would be something completely different XD.
@Gabi I think there's a reasonable chance you'd like it (despite the title, most of the book is not about cats), but it just was on sale in the US, so if it's quite expensive there, maybe worth waiting for it to go down in price over there?
Gabi wrote: "If sb would start posting spider pics, that of course would be something completely different"Of course XD
Deborah wrote: "the title is so silly I thought it was a joke at first."It kind of was :) But hopefully a good one! I can't wait to read it to confirm for myself. So far it looks like most people have liked it.
I’m enjoying this so far. I’m only about a quarter of the way through but I’ve already recommended it to my teenage daughters.
I liked it. I'm done, and do not want to read more, and can't particularly recommend it to anyone I know, but it was engaging and had some thoughtfulness. I do look forward to the spoiler thread.
I am enjoying it so far. But I would want to know. Why are people really so helpful. I am surprised to find all sorts of people in this book. And they are surprisingly helpful. And then they only help so much. Why? Maybe they could have helped more than what some of them did. Maybe some were helping too much.
Don't think this has been mentioned yet but the AI in the novel is from Kritzer's short story 'Cat Pictures Please' it's free at Clarkesworld in print and audio if you want to check it our before buying the book.http://clarkesworldmagazine.com/kritz...
Now that's a word, Mary! I've heard that there is a short story, but I didn't know where. Thanks a lot for the link. That's a good way to figure out if I like it.
I've just read the short story and this alone makes me want to flood this forum thread with pictures on my 2 awesome cats 😺I also managed to snatch an ebook of the novel from my library. I was so lucky that the book happened to be in the batch of new arrivals to (Danish) Libby just 3 days ago. As a cat-lover I'm looking forward to starting on chapter 1 🐈

And another thread for posting pics of other people's cats and emus!
I hope this book inspires everyone to post a lot in both! ^_^

A more thorough discussion belongs in the spoiler thread. ;)
Yes we'll discuss that for sure!
I like the cheering for online friends. Especially right now, recognizing friendships that are virtual can be just as strong as IRL friendships feels very cozy.

Yeah, maybe just take out the sentence about driving :)
Those all sound like really good questions to discuss in a day or two! I will likely open the spoiler threads a bit early as these are "shorter" books.

I haven't read the book yet, so I can't really say how much of that is spoilery, but this whole discussion does not belong in the first impressions thread. I know how hard it is to wait for the spoiler thread to open, but we should still remember that this thread is for people who have just started the book, or who are figuring out if they want to read it. This is not the place for in-depth discussions, or final thoughts after finishing. It sucks, I know, but as long as Goodreads doesn't fix the (iOS) app so that everyone can see tagged spoilers, this is how it has to be.
I started reading this this morning while I was waiting for Murderbot to pop up on my Audible, and I love it! It's not exactly a surprise, but I did not expect to relate so hard to someone in the very first chapter. I'm already at 50% and now I'm thinking of not starting Murderbot immediately, and instead finishing this. Shocking, I know!

Yes? I'm going to be finishing it in less than an hour. I totally ditched my beloved Murderbot for CatNet ^_^
Did you really read it in a single day? How long did you take? Is this a reread for you? Also wait, Is this an audio book?
I had only heard rumors that people such as you existed. Really excited to know that they are true. Hope I can be one someday.
Kevin, my dear co-mod is an adorable virtual fox and while she has not yet had stuff fall out of the sky for me, I would not put it past her ;-)
