ABANDONED. YA kids - elf figurines with real hair in a dark tree (not dark crystal)

Hey so I can’t remember the author or title or plot really of this full size kids book that was I believe photos of figurines the author has made that looked like elves with real hair (kinda like dark crystal) and I believe it took place in some dark roots tree - maybe there was an evil elf and a magic sword or something and I think the main character fell in love... I would have read this in the late nineties early 2000s and I think it was new then any help would be awesome
