Children's Novel - A boy discovers a staircase that can be used for time travel. He goes back 30-60 years and marries a girl from that time period.

My brother is trying to find a particular book read to his class when he was in 4th grade in 1996.

These are the details I know:

It was about a boy, 12-14 years old who finds out a staircase allows for travel through time. Walk down it, and you go backward in time. Walk up it, and you go forward in time. It's an old house, and he ends up marrying a girl from an older time. My brother thinks the boy goes 30-60 years back in time. He said he's pretty sure it's a full book and not a short story.

Any ideas? He's been searching online for years, and I thought maybe someone else remembers the story. I'd like to find and purchase it for his birthday if I can figure out a title. If you remember this story and know any other details, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much!!
