The country is in its death throes.

I think it's a form of escapism. A way to imagine yourself in a place where you have to adapt or die. A different challenge than the ho hum of worrying about paying your bills and traffic and all those common modern day concerns. We were hunters for thousands of years and only lately have we been tossed onto couches to watch Netflix for hours a day. Our bodies and our minds remember the struggle. The primordial fear. The hunger. The adrenaline of the hunt. I think that is what calls out to us from Apocalyptic type novels. Plus they're just fun to read!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts... you are right, of course! those genes of hunting/surviving/overcoming the fear need some sort of exercise, so to speak! As for being fun , sorry to disagree- each to their own! I'd get sleepless nights from violence filled stories.. whilst my hubby would be disturbed by " complex romance" ones haha :o)
On a separate note, some people might be "comforted" by learning how badly fictional characters had suffered.. kind if makes them feel it will NOT happen in real life, and will not happen to them..

They're also stories of hope. I can't think of much more adversity to overcome than the world going dark and filling up with monsters all around you. To be able to survive and eventually thrive in that kind of environment. To band together and try to rebuild civilization in the midst of so much chaos and destruction. It shows the strength of the human spirit. The lengths people will go through to protect their family. I've also sprinkled in some 'complex romance' plot lines throughout. :-). Try a newly minted vampire crushing on a much more mature three hundred year old one in the midst of a global apocalypse.
Definitely a lot of gore and violence though! They are zombie novels after all :-)

Would you go as far as saying that reading your novels might be somewhat therapeutic for people with mental health issues..? They might find a parallel with the horror stories inside their mind...and know that there is a hope to escape out of any horror.

Hmm... I'd never really considered them as therapeutic. People do read as an escape though... I write for much the same reason.
