ABANDONED. Man emerges from DSRV to find human race gone

I read a book sometime in the early to middle 80s around the time I was reading a lot of Saul Bellow and Bernard Malamud.

The plot line, as near I can remember, involves a man who is in a DSRV of some sort and when it re-emerges, he finds that God has destroyed the human race after nuclear war but forgot about this poor guy. As the story progresses, God allows him to arrive at an island of primates, where he has a child with a primate(?). I think there are conversations with God and somehow with a chimp he has/knows.
