A girl (pretty sure the name is Lucy) moves into a new house. Rumor has it that the young boy who used to live there died/disappeared long ago. The girl finds his old journal and discovers that whatever she writes comes to life. she finds herself in the land that the boy had written into existence and finds him there, alive and well, but he was turned into a cat and is now a witch's familiar. I specifically remember scenes of the boy being fascinated with modern things like refrigerators and plastic bags. I'm almost certain that the cover was cool colors (blue/purple/green) and had a boat. I read it about 10 years ago. It had to have been published before 2011.
